Those are the fake pots. The fake pots work most of the time, and are a copy made in China. I have never had a problem with any real ALPS pot I have ever purchased, and I will stick with the real thing made in Japan.

Probably me, if I can find it. I bought a bunch once I found a good dealer. I know I have 10s and 100s, but will take a peak and see. I still don't really know how to tell, but at the time I bought in bulk, I read a web page explaining what to look for. I've slept many times since then though. Sure is good to see you posting Mr. Pak, AK ain't near the same without ya. :thmbsp:
 
I ordered a 50k.Apls motorized pot from a supplier in China.It has two blue plastic bodies and a rear mounted DC motor.How can I tell if it is a fake?
 
I have used my "fake" alps pot as a shunt in a passive pre. Initial testing sounds promising... currently burning in.
 
I was going to buy some of the "Alps" pots seen on eBay, but decided to check my parts stash first. Lucky I did because I found about a half dozen new Alps Black Beauties that I bought while in Japan back in the 80's that I forgot about.:) I forgot how big those things are and turning them feels like they're oil dampened.
 
I had two counterfeits. One had an open channel. The other had very bad channel matching. Garbage. I got the counterfeits bought from eBay seller in China. The genuine items I bought from eBay seller in Germany. (For what it's worth, as anyone can sell fakes. They might not even know they are fake.)

I am amazed that someone would go through all the trouble to counterfeit a pot. The tooling to make the body of these is not cheap to create. The only thing I can think is that someone cranked out a zillion of these and sold them as genuine at wholesale to someone, and they are still out there in the market.

It just doesn't seem like the kind of lucrative product that would attract counterfeit manufacturers.
 
I wish the 20k with knurled shaft and loudness taps came up more often.

I usually buy the Alps RK27 pots from Mouser. I would think they'd catch hell if they had fakes...

I am not sure if mine is even more fake as it’s not even an Alps. just installed it on my Pioneer A-7 and it’s performance is surprise.
Well balanced signals on both channels through out the track and not the slightest sound at the minimum level. A little tight while turning it , but I am happy.

Probably a knock-off fake ALPS, but if it's working, service longevity may be the main issue. Enjoy it in the meantime and replace it if it goes wonky.
