Fall New England FrankenFest Saturday October 20th, 2018 Sutton MA

Had a great time there. Thank you to everyone involved with the planning and organizing. The demos were a really good idea as it was good to hear everyone's equipment without any other competition.

Cheers,
Ed

If anyone liked the planter box speakers, the components are very simple.

These are the no-name ribbon tweeters. They were branded as "AudioPur" when I bought them but now they are called something else. I think they sound really nice, especially considering the price.

The woofers are Seas L15RCP/N that I purchased in bulk from a construction removal project. They are very similar to these.

The crossovers are incredibly simple. .33mH coil in front of the woofer. 8.2uf cap and 2.2 ohm resistor in front of the tweeter. Adjust the resistor up or down to your liking for blend with the woofer. The tweeter is wired in reverse polarity to the woofer.

The enclosures are just a hair under a cubic foot, about .8. With a 1.25 to 1.5" long port depending on whether you flair the ends. The port width is 1.25"

Here is a response curve.

I still have about 14 of the Seas woofers siting around the shop. If anyone wants to move forward with a project like this, PM me. Whether you make boxes, use Parts Express boxes, or cementitious planters, they are a great little speaker for a $250-$300 investment. I think the midrange and upper end clarity is hard to beat. Coupled with a sub, and it's an amazing bargain.

I enjoyed the experience last year but knew right away the date this year wasn't going to work for me. Hope everyone had a good time.

I'm not good at names but really enjoy my Magnat 10" 3 way speakers, also the ADC Sound Shaper EQ I bought from another nice guy at the last event, Next time I'll offer some gear of my own!

Your speakers had great deep bass can you tell us about the woofer and passives?
Where are the passives tuned?
I thought there was a sub, but there wasn't.

Hi Pete,

The woofers are Parts Express DC200-8, 8" woofer

https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dc200-8-8-classic-woofer--295-310

The passives are Parts Express DSA215-PR, 8" passive.

https://www.parts-express.com/dayto...eries-aluminum-cone-passive-radiator--295-549

Simulated with WinISD, two passives per 1.8 cu ft cabinet. Simulation showed at that cabinet volume with each passive weighted with 18g should give -3db at 35Hz. I didn't have time to confirm this as I listened to them for the first time with no weight Friday night and they sounded a bit thin. Saturday at the 'fest after setup I tuned them by ear adding weight a little at a time with Moretite putty. I still have a lot of tweaking to do on these, they were very green when I brought them.

I don't know how much weight is on them and where the passives are tuned at the moment, I stopped when I thought the bass was about where I wanted it (and I was about out of Moretite anyway).

What an outstanding community this really is...! Plans and links provided so that everyone can enjoy the surprise speakers, without profits in mind ! Oh, the power of music, sweet, sweet music...

Congratulations are in order. You folks had a great event, again ! Were the folks who left quickly simply looking to buy more goodies ? Maybe, there might have been more goodies for sale at the Spring show ? Audio folks are a fun group...Some love to listen while some never want to believe their system is not as good...Still, there are others in the hobby/obsession who are looking to buy today to sell tonight. Sometimes, that gets in the way of the common goal for a good listening time. If that was the situation, it is great that the "scheduled" audition time worked out so well.

You New Englanders run a smooth, well oiled machine. I hope to make the next show...

Hey Lar!
You would have had a great time, and a great contributer as well.
The listening session time slot worked out well. In the past, it's been a bit chaotic with all the systems playing simultaneously. Everyone enjoyed getting to listen to the demo systems. Some real eye openers for sure. The vintage systems sounded fabulous, the modern systems were great!
I think some of the folks that left in the early afternoon are more local than guys like me who tend to stay for the day. Hey, I made the nearly 3 hour trek up there, I'm making the most of it!

A few thoughts -

I’m all for getting fresh faces to the event.
I post on about 6 different Facebook groups alerting those folks to the event.
There are lots of other audio forums we can post on - this is not just an AK event (obviously it is not in any way officially sanctioned by AK).

It’s 5 months to the next event - people should talk it up, just think if each of us could get just one more person to come.

I always mention it to people I meet at local record shops.

I just ask that nobody posts it on CraigsList.

For the next event I’ll put up a foody thread where people can post what they’re going to bring. That way we won’t spend an afternoon snacking solely on chips.

Incidentally, I’ve marked the Barter Town thread as completed so all comments should be posted here.

Someone mentioned that they’d like the event to start and finish earlier.
Our agreement with the hall is that we have the space from 11-5.
Some people had other things to do and left early, you do what you got to do.

Seminars are always welcome, think about what YOU can do, even if it’s something simple - don’t just wait for it to happen, because it very well may not.

In the past I’ve had T-shirts and polo shirts made.
Would anyone like to see caps, sweatshirts, hoodies made? Are you happy with the logo?
If so I could get some stuff made up for the March 23rd event.

I’m already planning on my demo system for the next event.

Jim
Jim. the logo is good. Maybe hats would look good with it.

Hey Carlos, glad I could help. Those Volt 6v2 sounded terrific! I sure hope you decide to keep them out of your car and use them there at home instead. I do suggest you add good binding posts.

Nice meeting you too! Ping me if you've got any further questions about the stuff I had brought or have here at home. I do have one question for you: When I visited the DIY Sound group website and found the kit for the Volt 6v2 earlier today, I was left confused. If you want to build a pair, do you add 2 to the shopping cart or does a quantity of 1 get you a pair? That didn't seem clear to me.

@Ken Mitchell Do you have a list of tracks that you played? I enjoyed quite a few of them.

I just looked at the woofers again and the Vas is 1.6 cu ft, having the cabinet volume about
the same and tuning near Fs of about 30 produces roughly a B4 alignment. Tuning a bit
higher as you did in simulation should yield more output at 35 and is a good option. Nice work!

@Ken Mitchell Do you have a list of tracks that you played? I enjoyed quite a few of them.

Sorry, no list but a vague memory. I know I played a track from the Gregory Porter album "Take Me To The Alley", and that was track 13. It's the second version of the song "Holding On", the one featuring artist "Kem". I believe another was at least one track from the Macy Gray album "Stripped", perhaps the track "I Tried", or perhaps her rendition of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters." Those cuts do demonstrate the airiness of single-mic recording in some old converted Brooklyn church. Perhaps during some non-demo time I played the first cut off the Steve Winwood album Refugees Of The Heart, "You'll Keep On Searching". I didn't seem to keep a record of what I played, no pun intended.

I do also recall that when the younger fellow with the hand-built kit speakers asked to hook his freshly-made creations to my Bluesound Powernode 2 (streamer/DAC/amp), I ended by queueing up Yo Yo Ma playing Bach: The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites, "Suite No,1 in G Major."

Thanks @Ken Mitchell !

Btw, everyone should put this track on their listening list: Sara Bareilles, "Once Upon Another Time." Once you get past the simulated fire sound effect at the beginning, the rest of the song will make your neck hairs stand on end.
