sundance tv is rerunning the great bob newhart show and in the "A Crime Most Foul" episode bob buys a very fancy portable tape recorder.he paid $420 for it which makes it over $1600 today. It doesnt look like a prop but an actual piece of equipment,it has a bunch of silver knobs and 2 level meter on the side, bob mentions the name but its just a made up japanese sound name. anybody have any idea what it might be.personally I dont think bobs character would pay that type of money just to record his therapy group.

Nak did have the 550 portable, also Marantz had a series of portables with two round meters on one side but not in yellow:

Here's the Nak 550:

The Nak is a monster in terms of size, the Marantz more like the Nagra. But, those are both cassette decks... was the one you saw an open reel?

Edit: n/m, just picked up the note that it was a cassette deck...

there is also the Sony TC-D5M portable cassette deck. I've run miles of tape through one:

And the Sony WM-D6C Walkman Pro (more miles through this one):

And a Uher unit, somewhat similar to this (a few different models):

when I first saw it i thought it was one of those portable video recorders, they were big back then, then I thought it was a RtoR.but the NAK 550 seems to be the closes fit, in one scene bob hits the eject button and the cassette pops up from the left side. But as I said i the OP,I doubt if his character would spend that much money a recorder just to record his therapy group.

I think the 550 might have cost more than that new, also... whatever it was, if it had two meters it probably exceeded the requirements for recording people sitting around talking :-)
