We're all born mad
Two of the best-recorded drum tracks I know of are:
Hands with a Hammer Terry Bozzio, on a Zappa compilation called You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 3
My favorite drummer was Keith Moon of the Who. Generally his manic, chromatic drumming wasn't too well mixed or recorded, unfortunately. Bell Boy on the album Quadrophenia is a pretty satisfying recording.
re: Bozzio w/ FZ and Moonie: you pretty much took the words outta my mouth, doc.
BTW, Moon's "place" within Quadrophenia is most prominent on the original U.K. Track and Classic Records 200g reissue (2007) releases that utilize the "drums & bass forward/vocals back" mix. This isn't the case with the U.S. Decca mix: the Raj is (way) forward, Moon & Ox are well back.
