Favorite John Mayall album?

qdrone

Music is my mistress
What an influence John has had on the Blues, I mean look at the guitarist's he introduced to the world. This is such a hard question because his recordings go back 50 years, yeah 50 years people with so many musicians,with him calling the shots,with so many configurations and in the end his bands replicated what he herd in his brain. Astounding.
So I'm going to answer my question and it isn't an easy one but USA Union Is my choice.

First the band is 2/3rds of Canned Heat(Taylor,Mandel) plus Don 'Sugarcane' Harris with no percussion. Mayall's percussion less period blows my mind.
I was in my teens back then and it taught me sometimes less is more. I mean I didn't even miss the drums because the songs were complete without them! Don 'Sugarcane' Harris sparkles on the recording with his violin work on songs like Crying are so moving.
Mayall is a legend who keeps exploring the boundaries of music.
So what's your favorite Mayall outing.
:lurk:

Turning Point. I suspect it's his most popular as well.

Empty Rooms is good too. Both from his "blues without bashing" period.

Odd, because I'm a drummer.

I didn't grow up listening to John Mayall, and have just started exploring.
The only physical copy I have is The Blues Alone. London ps 534. I like it a lot.

Even though clapton’s name is mud now, my favorite is “John Mayall’s Blues Breakers featuring Eric Clapton. Everyone on the recording is at their peak on every tune.
Another favorite of mine is”Back to the Roots” which I guess mayall was unhappy with.
Actually, I never heard a mayall record I didn’t like.

Me too, but I want to acquire more John Mayall LPs to broaden my scope. I'm far behind.

Back to the Roots (1971)

Besides Mayall, the album featured -

  • Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Harvey Mandel and Jerry McGee on guitars;
  • Larry Taylor and Steven Thompson on bass;
  • Keef Hartley and Paul Lagos on drums;
  • Johnny Almond on saxophone and flute.
  • Don "Sugarcane" Harris – violin
I saw him Nov 7, 1973 at DAR Constitution Hall in Wash. DC. - celebrating his (then) upcoming 40th birthday.
My memory is that the audience applauded everything he did. He'd play a riff, then the same riff in another song,
then shift the riff upscale, then the same riff backwards, and they applauded wildly everytime, which seemed to make him more and more angry.
