Hi, all!

What are your favorite sprays for cleaning switches and potentiometers on old amplifiers?

As always, any input is greatly appreciated.

Wait... something other than Deox-it?

Kidding Aside... I've used some industrial sprays, but they never seem to work as well as Deox-it.

3M and I wanna say WD40 makes a cleaner. But again they are for heavy duty clip style connectors, id not feel comfortable walking towards any audio gear with a can of Wd-40 even if it was labeled as "electrical". That's just me tho..

If you are asking favorite... most folks on the site have been pointed to Deox-it. Rightfully so, it's a great product.

You may want to check out their line of cleaners/lubs. I have used the gold spray on newer gear, and "5" on anything with a pot or switch...

Good luck in your quest for finding the best contact cleaner.

I'm interested what others use or may recommend.

Kind Regards,
John

At one time,DeoxIt was not readily available in Canada, and prices have generally been (and for the most part continue to be) far from reasonable.

My long time go-to was always MG Chemicals, and I have no qualms whatsoever about using this product as an alternative to DeoxIt:

Well damn...

It's super cleaner, never seen this, I'd be willing to test it out.

Hey arts,

How's it hold up against Deox-it? Or can you not tell? :) I wonder if it cleans any better...

Come to think of it, there is a video on YouTube regarding Deox-it and other compounds. I'm looking it up now.

If I find it I'll post the link!

Kind regrds,
John

I think DeOxit is a good product but am annoyed that it costs as much as it does. I've also used MG Chemical's because some (very) old school radio techs I encountered said that's what they used and had done for decades. Also that DeOxit was not worth the price because it's no better.

I can't really comment other than both seem to do the job. Truth is my start and continued use of DeOxit was wholly due to what I read on these forums.

But I am in need of another can and last week I intended to purchase one. There must have been a price increase or the store I frequent started gouging. Instead of the $21 I last paid it was now $24 and I balked. MG Chemicals is half that and it would take some convincing for me to believe that DeOxit is twice as good.

Frankly,I cannot tell any difference between this product and Deoxit. Not in initial effectiveness, quantity of solution applied or required for good results, and in long term effectiveness.

I only use this grade of MG Chemicals cleaner as this particular formulation provides really good deep cleaning, lubrication,an antioxidant, and is suitable for use with gold plated surfaces. So basically, all in one coverage.

I have heard of people using ultrasonic cleaning. Taking as much as the pot apart as you can. clean and spray whatever spray you like for protection. Deoxits Faderlube seems to come up often.

I have used CRC QD contact cleaner many times.
It's way cheaper than Deoxit (~$5 per 11 oz. can) and I have no complaints.

On the 'cheap' Fry's T.A. Emerald 5000 Puretronics Contact Cleaner and Lubricant... can use a lot

after dry time use a little DeoxIT

I have used the MG Chemical's contact cleaner loaded with silicon for years and recently got my hands on a can of Deoxit. Having now tried both I would venture to say that they are both good, but the Deoxit worked better on those badly oxidated contacts such as the function switches in Yamaha Natural Sound series receivers. It also did great on blackened function switches on H/K (X)30 series receivers. Back in the 80's, Philips had a contact cleaner that I believe is no longer available. I still have a half of a can of that stuff, and it also works very good, but not as good as Deoxit which I must say is very over priced at $30+ a can in my area where a can of MG Chemical contact cleaner runs at around $18 for twice the amount of cleaner. I therefor use Deoxit for those tough jobs and the MG Chemicals for the rest.

They say skunk oil is absolutely magic on switches and controls, but it's incredibly difficult to get the equipment set up behind the skunk and then annoy the creature until it sprays the correct spot. On stubborn controls you may have to repeat the process several times, which means keeping several skunks on hand. Until a more convenient skunk process is worked out, along with some arrangement with the ASPCA, DeoxIT is the best we've got, and I'm sticking with that.
