Fear the 4ohm speakers i just brought are not a 100 percent match with my 9090db

From the reading I've done I don't have a good feeling hooking up my recent purchase of Ar3a speakers to my 9090db .
I recently found a brand new Adcom GFA 6002 Power Amp. for sale at 300.00 dollars.
Would buying the Adcom solve the problem to run the 4ohm speakers with my 9090db ?
Does the 9090 have the right connections to run the Adcom ?

No problem. Just watch the volume knob until you get used to them.

I have had several pair of AR-3a. They are not overly difficult to drive. The big Sansui won't have any problem.

FWIW, I also had a Sansui 7000 for a while. Great receiver and it pushed the AR-3a just fine.
 
My 9090 (non-dB) could NOT handle my Magnepan MG-IIIs, it clipped at anything above a whisper. If that's any kind of a guide, I'd be careful.

If you already have the AR3a you could try it with your 9090dB but be VERY careful if it starts sounding clipped. You don't want to damage those tweeters.

That Adcom seems to say it's fine with 4ohm loads but is one of many, many other amps that can do it too (i.e., you've got tons of other options).

You might want to read the below. I'm a huge fan of Belles amps and have three of his early design, only 100watts into 8ohms but with enough current to pull a freight train. I've read it's 185watts into 4ohms with no reason to doubt such.

I've been using one for about 8yrs to drive my 85db 4ohm Infinitys without issue. So about 6yrs ago I purchased a pair of AR58S rated 4ohm that do dip down to 3.2ohm and less at some frequencies. Sounded great with the Belles.......then the first fried the power switch after about 6months. Figured it was the switch, brought it to my tech and connected another of my Belles amps. You guessed it, about 6months later the second amp had the power switch fail, this was no coinkydink.

My Belles amps are my babies so this wasn't good, went on the hunt for an amp stable to 2ohms without a cooling fan that not only could I afford but also looked great.

Meet the Soundcraftsmen MA5002, no more blown power switches.

The Belles is happily driving the Infinitys again, as these pictures show it's a beast in its own right but didn't like speakers that dip below 4ohm.

interesting. I had a friends 9090db here for a but of work, not much but I did reseat the transistors and rear heatsink and I ran the snot out of that thing into MG-IIIa speakers and it would be a fine combo for most. Meters were just eye candy only reaching just over 20 on the meter before the amp ran out of steam but the speakers were loud.
 
Power meters are usually too slow to show the real power asked from the amp to deliver (peaks), the actual number could be much higher than what the needle shows at the moment. So, some caution is advisable when relying on meters. Some meters are faster than the others, in my experience Sansui's analog meters are on the slow side.

I'm not sure what reading you've done if it's this thread, not sure why you don't have a good feeling?


My understanding is that the difference between the 9090 & 9090db is minimal howver I could be wrong but I highly doubt they are so far apart design wise that the 9090db isn't capable of running a 4Ohm load

I concur! I tried to drive my Celestion Ditton 66 speakers with a fully restored Sansui 9090(non dB) and although it could do it with an EQ attached, I didn't like the extra noise the EQ added. Also, they didn't sound like $1000 speakers when playing. It led me down the 4 ohm rabbit hole that led me to using power amps with heft. A lot depends on how you use your system, but it wasn't for me.

Amps I have used successfully for 4 ohm loads are Bose 1801, Pioneer Spec 2, and Yamaha M40.

I was getting everything the 9090db could deliver and yes the meters were slow and low. But I did say they were just eye candy.

The Crown OC-150a would have fairly accurate meters, peak or dB/VU, don't know which it does, but not easy to read watt output on that unit without a math background.

McIntosh MC-2505 has the fastest analog power meters I have ever seen, they literally fly with the transients, and have three selectable dB ranges. Very easy to hit the end stops if not careful, so I understand why companies opt for the eye candy instead.
