Feed and Wax....or Tung Oil?

I am fixing up a pair of original Large Advents in the larger Walnut cabinets....

I used Howard's "Restore-a-finish" and it did work wonders to get the walnut finish looking real nice.

Now I want to protect this nice look. So the question is:

Howard's "Feed and Wax" or "Tung oil"

What is the best approach to keep them looking good?

Those are actually two different things. Feed and Wax is something you use occasionally to condition the wood, Tung oil is a finish.
 
Except for real tung oil, most of the products marketed as "tung oil" are actually thinned varnish, and applying those over what you have could make a real mess.
 
BE VERY CAREFUL with any rags used with Tung Oil and other stains and finishes!
Danish OIL etc can SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST !!!!!
Oxygen exposure creates the heat, chemical reaction.

Any Rags used to apply spread or wipe up these can just burst into flames, most Cans are labelled with the Warning, but who reads those?
Do not throw them in the garbage can, but spread them out so they can air dry and not develop heat. When dry they are safe and can be disposed of.

I have proven this, in our paint dept, where Paint personnel uses rags to test/wipe up/ demo all sorts, and were throwing rags a plenty in the small trash can.
nothing like a real fire drill to stop that practice!

I think straight mineral spirits are notorious for the spontaneous combustion...

So true! I stained an outside gate and put the rags in the garbage can and looked out in front of my house & saw my garbage can smoking. I ran out with a garden hose to put it out. Luckily it was garbage day & the can was in the street by the curb. Otherwise it would have been sitting against my house on the side and my house could have burned down. I aways place the can away from the house at all times now and I'm very cautious with paints, stains etc.

I like tung oil as a finish because it can easily be fixed in case of damage. It's also idiot proof, which is good for a wood butcher like me. Tung oil with driers is the way to go, as it give a more durable finish faster. It will also be called tung oil varnish. Formby's is a highly modified tung oil and can be had in satin and gloss. Apply lots of thin rubbed in layers, never a heavy one. I've used "pure" tung oil and it's somewhat inferior. Linseed oil has been used as an oil finish, but it doesn't dry hard and isn't very resistant.

If you aren't finishing, use the feed 'n wax. Howard's refinisher and the wax can work miracles, but if you need to refinish, you need to bite the bullet and refinish.
 
Howards Feed&Wax was recomended to me to refreash my Snell typr J speakers and it worked wonders. As I understand it the Feed &Wax is to restore existing finiishes. Tung Oil is a finish to be applied to new unfinished wood or to apply over a existing Tung Oil finish...
 
Howards has specific recommendations o what not to apply over their finishes. I can't remember what they are but there is a thread/posts over on Classic Speakers about this.
HRAF is for finishes in fairly good condition to cover up minor scratches and some have used it to remove water rings. It isn't a protective finish and Howards wax should probably be used as a topcoat
All oil 'finishes' contain something other than oil and that's usually some type of varnish. They will produce a finish with some shine.
