Ferro Fluid

Does Ferro Fluid leak when a tweeter blows out?

In the attached pic of a dead tweeter from a DCM TF series speaker, you can see small dots around the center. The tweeters are mounted under the sock and not exposed. Is that Ferro Fluid? If so, does that mean a working tweeter with that condition is near death?

Any ideas on a replacement for this? Came from a DCM TF400.

Tanks!

no I cant see why it would leak..ferrofluid is held in the voice coil gap by the magnets magnetic field.

Looks like this would probably fit: http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=96
you'd have to reuse the old frame but I believe you can soften or cut the glue on swap them out pretty easily.

Thanks for the reference. Have you tried these before?
This would be to replace the rear-firing tweeter, so the wood cabinet could be altered easily enough.

BTW, were you suggesting replacing the tweeter guts with the guts from these?

RE: Botrytis' post:

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/sea...archid=7445847 - Sorry but the link did not work.

No - looks like a stock pioneer driver - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=270-058

Thanks for the suggestion.

I hadn't thought about being able to use a round driver to replace the front tweeters if they are going bad, since the tweeter rests in a recess in a perforated metal plate that suspends it in the middle of the upper woofer.

(can post pics tomorrow if needed).

It's a tried and true replacement for Boston Acoustics A40 tweeters where you swap out the faceplates. Looking at the second picture in the madisound link you can clearly see a separate faceplate assembly that can be removed.

I am uncertain that this will be an exact replacement but it'd be a good bet.

Certainly cheap enough & worth a shot, since the other tweeters may need help soon. Not sure that the DCM tweeter faceplate comes apart, though. I'm just amazed that a $4 tweeter is worth anything, considering it probably cost around a buck to produce. But for the rear-firing tweeter it will probably be fine.

I believe the TF drivers are Philips however those suggestions above look good until some replacements come forth leaving a saggy sock in the meantime.

Thanks for the link. Madisound reports that these are good to about 5000hz. Does anyone know where the DCM TF 400s cross over? The BA A40s these are also used for cross over at 3500.
