Ferrofluid in phenolic ring tweeters?

Did CTS use ferrofluid in their phenolic ring tweeters?

Some specifications I saw mentioned two different CTS tweeters of this type. One was rated at 7 watts and the other, I believe, was rated at 3 watts.

I have replaced a pair of them with the Parts Express replicas which are claimed (by them) to handle 30 watts. If any phenolic ring tweeters contained ferrofluid, would it not be these?

Very rarely.

Mostly for tweeters sold to Name brand speaker distributors.

Since they cannot be taken apart after manufacturing,

The hundreds of blown out ones I've replaced had no FF.

There is No way to open or repair them.

Our trick was to Coat the dome with a few layers of Elmers Glue.

Then add a silicone bead around the cone parameter.

Really gave a Sparkle to the Highs...

@Buck Rogers - thanks for the response.

That makes me wonder further about the different power ratings between the CTS phenolic ring tweeters and the Parts Express replica phenolic ring tweeters.

If the Parts Express versions are truly replicas, I wonder how they could acheve a rating of 30 watts if the originals were rated at 7 watts?

The speakers I am dealing with actually had functioning, original CTS tweeters but one of the CTS drivers used in the midrange position was shot. That original driver was rated at 10 watts. The cost of getting new replacements from Parts Express was less than having the original drivers re-coned. It seemed logical that if I was replacing those with new ones capeable of higher power handling (10W vs 50W), that I should do likewise with the tweeters, (7W vs 30W)..

[I wonder how they could achieve a rating of 30 watts if the originals were rated at 7 watts?] .... Modern Voice Coil design and manufacturing techniques.

Some people are adamant about keeping the sound "Original"... Yuck!

Who wants to ride around with some 1960's design Shock absorbers and Fibre glass belted tires!

Phenolic tweeters are the Bias Belt tires of the tweeter world. An OK HF driver from 50 years ago...

I've upgraded hundreds of speakers to "Silk dome" tweeters ever since they became inexpensive and common in the 90's.

Adjust the crossover levels for Modern sound sources, Makes super happy customers and an easy sale.

Very satisfying to hear speakers I repaired/upgraded 35 years ago and they still sound excellent and far out perform the "Originals".

My new "Go To" tweeter is the Peerless/Vifa Ring Radiator. A novel design that blows away ALL metal and Silk dome tweeters by a wide margin.

Super high performance, Wide bandwidth, Excellent power handling, Subjectively and measurement wise the best Dome tweeter now available.

Saw some recently that were 25$ each NEW... Wowzer what a deal.

Hope that helps.
