I just bought a FiiO D07 DAC from Pitbull Audio for $50. It's a DAC for coaxial digital out or S/PDIF optical digital out. It converts the digital signal to standard RCA audio and 1/8" stereo headphone. I bought it to connect my Sony blue ray, which recieves Pandora, to my stereo in the living room. I also found out that our Comcast cable box has a coaxial digital out, so I tried it on that as well. (My wife likes Light Classical on Comcast, and she is always using the TV as a radio leaving the set on.) The little D07 works great!

The unit has a Cirrus Logic 344C for the DAC and sounds nice! I had to roll off the treble a little as it's still compressed MP3, but it sounds as good as I could expect given the source. Good clear bass and great channel seperation.

From the online reviews, I realized that most people purchaced this unit to link their TVs to their soundbars or stereos as a lot of newer TVs do not have RCA outputs. They said that it correctly mixes down the 5:1 or Dolby Surround to analog stereo whereas other units would confuse the channels.

Oddly, FiiO recently stopped production of the D07, but there are still many around online. FiiO is working on a new version.

OK, bought the last one from one seller. I'm having issues using a Fiio Taishan SPDIF DAC - it won't recognize the Xifinity box (Pace RGM150) from either the Co-Ax or teh Optical. I'll give this a try since we know it works on your system.

Which cable box do you have?

I've never been asked that before! I have an Xfinity Arris RNG150N. I haven't tried the optical (don't have a cable) but the coax works fine.

Hope it works for you. However if you bought it from Pitbull, they'll allow you to return it.
 
I really like the Arris boxes and modems. Arris makes nice stuff.

His is a Pace box - not so nice :( We'll see when it gets here ...
 
I just found out something about my Sony BD player - set Quick Start Mode to OFF. Why? 1. it reboots the entire device and clears the memory. 2. it shuts off the power to the USB port. I have my Fiio D07 plugged into the BD player's USB port, so it shuts off the Fiio when I shut off the BD.

It takes a little longer to come up when cold starting, but after is does, it locks onto Pandora on the first try. When it was on the Quick Start (standby) mode, it would sometimes BSOD after clicking on Pandora (except in this case, it's the Black Screen of Death.)
 
Update:

I've had the FIIO D07 in daily use since I bought it in February. I have it connected via coax to our XFinity Arris cable box, and it goes into my Yamaha A1000 integrated amp and then to a pair of Celestion Ditton 44 speakers. It's pluged into the Switched outlet on the back of the A1000, so it's off when not in use.

My wife likes to listen to Light Classical on Comcast cable which is why I bought this little DAC in the first place. She was simply leaving the TV on all day and listening on the crappy TV speakers! Anyway, it's been in daily use since I hooked it up with absolutely no issues. Sounds as good as the source allows (which is fairly compressed.) I really like this DAC for what I'm using it for. Oddly, FIIO quit making it, however, they still make the D03 Taishan.
