Filter Capacitor Suggestions

I'm replacing the filter capacitors on my SAE XXXIB Amplifier, and am looking for some suggestions. I have two 6000 uF 50 vdc (65 vdc Surge) and would like to replace them with something close. Since they have the 65 vdc surge, I'd assume I'd just go with something over 65 vdc. I attached a picture of one. They have screw lug connections that screw thru the PCB. This distance is between the lugs are 7/8" and they're 2" in diameter X 3" tall. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

You can go up to 100 volts if you wish but is there a problem to begin with? Personally, I only replace them if they are over 50 years old or giving me problems like electrically or physically leaky.

You can most likely find those replacement capacitors at AES or Mouser dot com. No affil.
 
I'm wondering what to do with my XXXIB also. The version you have is the early one, mine is too, with computer grade capacitors, the later version used solder tab 10,000uf @50V Elna capacitors. So go with at least 10,000uf @ 50V capacitors. I usually use Nichicon Gold Tunes when rebuilding the later version. They are a 10mm snap-in style capacitor which fit fine in a board that used solder tabs. The choice of computer grades is very limited to say the least. I thinking I'll get mine rebuilt with the original capacitors and worry about them later as the power supply circuit board pops right out.

Mouser has some 12,000uf/50V United Chemi-cons that would do nicely, cheap too.

I agree, unless you know they are bad leave them alone for now. I would be upping the voltage if I had to replace, 75volt or more.

Hi Chris,

For screw terminal you can check Nichicon LNR and LNT. Double check on capacitor diameter, length and terminal spacing. Fitment can be difficult if replacement capacitor is larger in diameter or longer.

Another choice is probably Kemet ALP series but I dont have the datashet right now.

They really don't have to be screw terminal, but they do have fit in a 7/8" space. I can stretch the leads out or something if they have leads, but snap in's will have to fit.
 
I've seen those types of caps blow up. Replace them.
I wouldn't do screw terminals, anything that is going to fit that 2" diameter is going to be expensive and too high in microfarads for the amp.

Description: Vishay Sprague ALUMINUM ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITOR 6000UF, 50V, +75, -10%, SCREW; Capacitance:6000ÏF; Voltage Rating:50V; Product Range:36D Series; Lifetime @ Temperature:20000 hours @ 125øC; Capacitance Tolerance:+75%, -10%; Capacitor Terminals:Screw, the screws are 22.2 mm apart, so it should just drop in, only a little smaller. Digikey & Mouser wanted $47 a piece for these, and Newark had them on sale for $19.95. I just hope I didn't miss something and they're way off target.

Link? Also it has to be the exact diameter to fit well, otherwise there's no point in getting a screw terminal cap, and I still stand by my suggestion for fitting in snap ins. You could easily fit two into a single clamp.

Cemerson, you got quite a deal ($19.95) on those caps from Newark, as they are now $59.50 each! I am currently looking for the same value to be installed in my SAE/Hervic Receiver. Mouser has them for $47.60. I am now looking for a less expensive option.

Most amps that wattage have caps that are 10,000uF, so I don't think these will be too big even if over twice the size. Doing the math on these gives a voltage drop of about 2 volts at max power of output freq. above 60hz. The stock ones would have a ripple of about 4.5V
Racingh11, thanks for the research and recommendation. Those look to be the "ticket". As a bonus, the specs show them to be a nice fit for the factory clamps. And the price is right....and made in the EU.

You're welcome. I use that exact capacitor in other amps, so the sizing was on my radar. The majority of the amps I rebuild use 2 inch diameter, screw-terminal caps.
