I've made some posts about these in the past, but long story short: My dad bought these Klipsch kg4s back in the late 80s. For my whole life they sat in the garage getting dusty. Pulled them down a few months ago and found one tweeter is out and something sounded off. Bought new titanium tweeters and complete boards from Crites, the whole 9 yards!
Over the weekend I pulled them apart and swapped it all out. Added new foam gasket around all components, added some mass inside the cabinets, and recoated the cabinets with spar urethane. They sound great! The amp is a Nakamichi TA-3A I picked up on local craigslist. I think I overpaid for it since it may need some love but it works.
Current setup is not the permanent setup. I am realizing these speakers are really great but very sensitive to placement. I am moving soon so not going to really get them perfect right now, they're just in a spare bedroom at my parents.
Couple of things left I am still playing around with (besides positioning):
- The foam tape I used is thicker than the OEM gaskets (closed cell I bought from Parts Express). When I tightened everything down some areas o the woofers and horn in between screws didn't go down all the way AKA the frame of them is flexing slightly. Is this throwing off sound at all? I got everything pretty tight. Not as tight as possible but pretty tight. Should I loosen slightly so no more flexing?
- The new tweeters sometimes are buzz. Seems to be mostly with classic rock at certain acoustical guitar frequencies. Very minimal but it is distracting. Are the tweeters still breaking in or are they maybe bad? Not super replicable, so maybe is the receiver.
- Only put one coat of minwax helman. Not a thick coat but I brushed it in good. Think I need at least one more w/ 600 grit in between.
But they really rock!! Not sure this amp is the best pairing but it is totally fine until I find something better at an estate sale.
