I won a pair of these off of the bay, but one was not as described. There are two 5/8" cracks to the surround. I have read everything I can about these including a long discussion on another site (audio heritage) that involved members here at AK. The other site's thread was 3 yeaars old, so I am praying that there are some new developements that someone can share with me. It would be great If I could get a surround kit for these, but it seems they are just not made. Anyone with some experience to help out here. I have done many refoams.

I'll check with my supplier tomorrow. I'll get measurements off mine at home to play it safe.

A thousand THANKS to you. I got a reasonable deal on them, but despite my questions on the condition of these woofers, the one is not up to snuff. Seller is being somewhat of a jerk, but that is a diiferent story.

I am very interested in what you can come up with.

I'll order the surrounds from my supplier. I'll then match them up with my L3's, which fortunately are still intact, and see if the dimensions are correct and the suppleness is correct. The surround, of course, can't be too stiff or performance will be impacted.

I'll then let you know if it's a match. I'll then let you decide whether or not you'd like to give them a go.
 
Absolutely!! These seem to have a very small area to glue the surrounds to. Any other tid bits of info would also be greatly welcomed. Again I thank you. :thmbsp:

Next thing is for you to pay a visit to YouTube and check out the vast posts on speaker surrounds, ie how to. Lots of good info, which is how I got started. It will be a couple weeks or more as I have several speakers I'm working on and need to finish putting my order together.
 
I am in no hurry, but I still appreciate your efforts. I have done several refoams at this point. I've done 10" Cerwin Vegas, 10" Pioneers, 5" optimus LX5, and some 5" mini Advents. None were that hard, but the JBL 708g-1 woofers look a little different... I don't know at this point. The surrounds still have good life left in them, but I am thinking down the road. My thinking is that it will only get harder to find something suitable the longer I wait.

Just a follow up, yeah I know it's been a long time waiting, but I'm expecting the surrounds in this week, MO or TUE. I'll compare to mine and see if they are a good match. If you found some already let me know.

Yes alot of JBL drivers only have a 3/32 flange to adhere to making the work somewhat tedious.Then you have the VC gap to deal with also which has extremely close tolerences in most cases. Just be patient and take your time and you should have great results :yes:

Wow, I clicked on the thread because it referenced the L3 speaker...then I was shocked to see that it was my own thread.

I now have the L3s up and running with a spare 708G-1 woofer in the wings. The spare has (2) 1/2"+ hairline cracks to the surround. I got these speakers free off of CL (though I gave the guy a nice cart for his TT and set it up for him) One of the woofer surrounds was torn completely around the basket, which is why I just bought a complete set of woofers.

Though the speakers seem to sound fine, the surround problem could rear its ugly head in the future. If these are hard to find now, it will only become more difficult later. Let me know if they're a good match...I probably should jump on this if they are.

any luck on these foams yet? I too am in need of at least 3 pairs of the correct foams. I have ordered several pairs from places that claim they are correct to find they are not even close.

Forgot to post. The surrounds have the correct ID but not the correct OD. They'd have to be trimmed to fit correctly. About the only way to do that would be to place some kind of ring, preferably metal, over the lip and resting against the roll that allows one to trim the excess off.

Wish I could have found a better solution. One other option, if you're interested, I can send a sample to my supplier and they might make a direct replacement. They won't do it without a sample driver to get precise measurements. Just a thought.
 
Just catching up with this thread. I have a pair of 708G-1s that need to be reconed as one woofer is DOA and both surrounds are bad. Any update as to finding legit replacement surrounds?
