Finally found some ADS 910s, but...

My wonderful mother-in-law was driving cross-country and agreed to stop along the way and pickup a couple 100lbs speakers.

I hooked the up when they arrived and they sounded glorious! (Well, I had to use deoxit on the connectors to get all the drivers working first.) The 910s sounded similar in tone to other great ADS speakers but more open and engrossing.

Sadly, however, after a couple hours of listening, the tweeter in one died. I was changing a record and touched my phono pre. There was a little static shock that created a pop in the speaker. Afterward, I could tell the tweeter was gone. I thought maybe the driver itself was blown, but swapped it into the other speaker and it worked fine. So, the issue must be in the crossover. I checked the connector and it seems fine. I also replaced the electrolytic (even though it's for bleeding highs and mids off the woofers).

Could it be one of the mylar caps in the tweeter circuit? Why would static have caused the issue?

you can check all those components with a meter. And the fuses are good and properly seated?

Fuses are good.

I think I have to pull the caps to check them, right? At that point, I may just recap the whole thing. My meter doesn't even seem to want to read the 100uf cap. Maybe its too big? Maybe I need a better meter.
 
I would be amazed if static could hurt anything in that crossover. I would jumper the switches on the crossover. I would then swap the crossovers. I just really don't think you ruined a component in that crossover.

Good thought on bypassing the switches. It could be one of those.

I'm tempted to build a new crossover from scatch to get all the superfluous mechanical connections out of the picture.
 
Pull the crossover card and clean it too. Make sure the connector is not deformed in some way. I would find the problem before rebuilding it. Few have found it very advantageous to recap those. They used pretty decent film caps. Find the schematic- that 100uf is just in there to protect the woofer.

I just carefully soldered a jumper across them. It is easily removed and a whole bunch easier than remaking them.

I spent some time combing over the circuit board trying to make sense of the schematic. Now that I understand how much those switches factor into the tweeter circuit, they are seeming like a likely culprit.

Jumpers sound like a good idea. I'll have to figure out where to place them next.
 
Success! The tweeter came back to life, so it must have been an issue with the switch. Hopefully, I bypassed the switches correctly and didn't do anything stupid.

Congrats! Look to be in great condition from the one pic. Let's see more! Did they come with the stands? If not, raising them up 7.5 inches makes a big improvement in the sound.
Awesome sounding speakers, pretty much put my herd in the back seat!
My tweeters and mids are with Richard So for rebuilding, looking forward to hearing what kind of improvement in the sound this will do.

I so wish they had stands! I'll take some more pics once they are back together. I've been putting them on stands that raise them about 10" but it feels too high. I was think more like 4", but 7.5" works well?

The wood is still in quite good shape. No one set plants on these babies ;)

The correct stands raise them 7.5 off the floor. Look forward to seeing more pics.

Did you clean the switches before the defeat?

I had one of those physically coming apart on the back of a KR-5400 causing a lost channel. Crimped it back together with a good cleaning and all is well.

I don't know what they do but I would want full functionality of the speaker. But you can call them hot rodded and enjoy them as they might sound better with those switches bypasses.
