Finally got my hands on a 4 track cart player! (It has some issues)

Bill Lear was certainly a crafty, smart person. He persuaded Ford to offer the option of an 8 Track player in the Mustang in 64. Armed with this commitment, he was able to convince the labels to release pop titles on the "new" 8 Track format.

My favorite was Madman Muntz. A southern California legend. I didn't know 8 tracks were available by anybody in 1964.

He also had a line of TVs that inspired the expression "Muntzing" - removing parts from a circuit, leaving only those absolutely necessary to put a picture on the screen.

From cars to mattress's to Ascot park I loved the home grown colorful characters during that period of Southern California. Then there was the mountain, the deserts and the ocean, all the things that made the Hotel famous. Nothing like it, had to be experienced.

That's not a 5K resistor -- it's five OHMS, five watts (the 'K' indicates 10% tolerance). It's R202, situated on the schematic between the two filter capacitors. If it's cooking, I'd first suspect a shorted C202, 1000 uF 25 V. Replace both C201 and C202, and check the two diodes D1 and D2 as well. Q4 and Q104 should also be tested for shorts.

I finally got around to pulling this thing apart further to peek at the capacitors. From the schematic, I had assumed that C202 was a pair of capacitors, so that’s what I ordered: two 1000uf 25v radial capacitors. But when I got in there it turns out it is just one giant capacitor with three terminals on the bottom. I’ve attached photos of this big cap.

Are there two individual capacitors inside this container? Can I use the standard, two terminal capacitors I bought in this circuit or do I need to go back to the store and find a new part? Sorry if these are annoyingly basic questions. I am not too experienced yet with this level of electronics repair.

You can certainly use the two separate caps to replace that OEM part. Desolder and remove the old part. Note which of the three legs of the old cap is the negative (if I read the old part correctly, there's an 'A', 'B' for the two positive terminals and an unmarked terminal for negative). Connect the negative leads of the two new parts to the PC board hole where the old negative terminal was; the two positive terminals go to the two other other holes. You may have to carefully bend the new caps' leads to fit. Pretty straightforward, and I'd imagine the two new parts together are smaller than the old one.

Did C202 (one section of that large cap) measure shorted? Test both sections with an ohmmeter on high range. If neither shows short, then you need to continue troubleshooting (Q4, Q104 for starters). But changing those caps after around 50 years or so is still a good thing.

yeah, 2 caps, one can, common negative it appears. Multi-section caps used to be fairly common, not so much anymore. The usual fix is to just sub 2 individual caps and combine the leads where necessary.
