Finally got that sound

Ok. I decided to get back into audio last year and I kicked it off by purchasing a new Marantz PM 8005 integrated amp. It replaced a Sony A/V receiver and driving some early 90s Klipsch Hereseys provided a much improved listening experience. But no matter how I tried and I tried equalizes, I could not get that deep bass sound. I changed the Hereseys out with both KLH Sixes and a set of recapped, mid 60s AR-2ax. But still no bass, at least not really feeling it bass.

So I purchased a Pioneer SA-800 integrated amp from that auction site, and used it as a preamp with the Marantz providing the power. The ARs now sound full and sharp. It's what I was looking for. I'm sure I could have gone a cheaper route. The pioneer amp sounds decent on its own, but doesn't have the clarity.

Very nice looking setup. Have you considered a small subwoofer (like the small Yamaha's) to fill in that bass? Thats what I use in the family room and it sounds pretty good. Glad to hear you found your sound.
 
I think if I put a sub in there I would have to move my TT to another room . It is an old house, 1922, and the room is not large. I've got to say the little pioneer driven by a modern, late model amp surprised me. Of course I will continue to tinker. That's what this is all about, right?
 
Funny to see this post, I have the quad version of that Pioneer amp (QA-800), and although not a big powerful amp, it really brings out the best in my Heresy's and other speakers. These 800 amps fall in that era of Pioneer equipment that slides under the radar, they are somewhat rare and have very good sound quality.

I have not had good luck with the Heresy's sitting flat on the floor though.
 
They are really built as well. I used a little detox it on the selector switch last night and discovered that all the switches and connectors are shielded by metal plates. Not so with other units I've opened up.
 
Well the Sony didn't have enough but neither did the new Marantz, which does not have a loudness button. The Pioneer driven by the Marantz as a power amp did the trick. It seems to be a good combo. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has coupled an old 70s amp/preamp with a new power amp. The sound is much better than either the Pioneer or the Marantz on their own.
