I recently bought a set of clunky old speakers that I thought looked retro cool (I have a disease where I buy speakers when ever I see them or if I tell myself they need saving!).... Once I got the covers off they turned out to be far more than I could ever have imagined them to be!
I took home unknowingly a pair of Tannoy Monitor 15 red speakers with orginal crossovers!! :yikes:

The cabinets I'm not sure if they have been made DIY or if they are original boxes that have been modified? Any Tannoy fans/experts out there have any comments on the boxes?

I am driving them quietly with a Kenwood 3300D amp and they are extremely efficient. I have not had them loud since i'm not sure how long they have been in storage for.

I am truly honoured to be taking care of these speakers now and would welcome any words of wisdom on how to care for them :)

One hell of a find.I found some 12s once but 15s are where the big money is.I would keep them because unless your loaded you'll probably not be able to afford a pair at market value.

I found a single 12" Monitor Silver in an EV Aristocrat I was given. Lovely sound. At market rates, it will be forever single.

You might want to inspect the caps in your crossovers. Mine was a sealed paper-in-oil so I haven't replaced. Yours may be the same.

The (later) Golds appear to have electrolytics. Some recap/modify the (Gold) xover: http://www.hilberink.nl/speaker1.htm

Dimensions are 93cm H x 63.5cm W x 48.5cm D. Strange but the boxes are slightly different inside. Was this a design or poor workmanship? They seem to be well made in every other respect.

Like Sam Cogley said.It may be a DIY build of the cabinets so there may be some variation.So how did you find these?Really an extraordinary find.

I found them right at the back of my local op shop (good will or charity store). I only saw the Tannoy logo on the crossover and thought "these speakers might sound ok" I honestly had no idea what they were at the time. It wasn't until I got home and read the sticker properly on the crossover. I am actually still a bit shell shocked that I would be this lucky to own a set of such rare and beautiful speakers. This stuff just never happens to me! I am so grateful :)
 
Great story! I am so happy to hear of your good fortune. I hope you decide to keep them and build a lovely system around them. Having a set of classic speakers like that is a great experience. You have a end game speaker for many people. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Thanks mate :) I will keep them at this stage. Such a rare opportunity for me and something I can share with my audio buddies also!
 
Wow, this might be the SOTY (Score of the Year), or at a minimum, honorable mention.

Also, welcome to AK. Truly a once in a lifetime find, so hopefully you find them to your liking and can put them back into use or find them a good home. Congrats!

Agreed. It appears that OP has the early x-overs, which should still be OK. My earlier post was (originally) based on a misunderstanding that OP had got "Golds", not "Reds" (and then edited).

That gap should be closed and sealed for the horn to work properly.

... and given how good my friends' 10" Tannoy Reds sound in re-purposed JBL C34 cabinets (also a scoop horn)- I bet these are really remarkably good.

Gotta love it! Congrats, happy for you. IMO, you owe it to yourself to keep these and build a system around them. It's not very often you will stumble upon speakers of this caliber. Even if you only keep them and use them for a while you will have at least experienced them fully. It's like having money in the bank, you can always get the value out of them later if you decide to move them along.
 
Those are an excellent find,ive heard them on an old EL-84 tube amp and the sound was top notch.As mentioned id put the best tube seperates in front of them and refinish the cabs and call it a day for your home based system

They are huge! The 2nd pic really shows their size.
What an amazing find. If I had found these, I think I'd leave them untouched, especially the cabs, which would be very difficult for me to not do!
