finicky right channel

Note: This only happens at low volume.

Onkyo TX-4500 MK II
(This happens on one of my modern JVC receivers also, which is odd the problem occurs cross generations)

At low volume, my right channel will sometimes fade out. If I crank the volume and go back low, it comes back great.

I've tried different wires and speakers. It does NOT happen on headphones.

Relay? Wouldn't that be permanently off if it was acting up?

I noticed if I just barely touch the speaker selector on both units, vintage onkyo and modern JVC, the channel comes back too, but only intermittently..
