Firefox and Windows 7

I am still on W7 and don't have time to upgrade right now. My FF is version 66.0.3 which is pretty old (April 2019, lol) and not all websites function with it. The current version of FF is 90.0.2

I just want to get a Firefox version that will function properly, but I am afraid that current Firefox (90.0.2) might not work with W7. It is also possible to upgrade FireFox to some version newer than what I have now, but not the latest.

My W7 is 64 bit if that influences which version of Firefox I should choose.

Who else here is using W7 and Firefox? Which version of Firefox is working for you?

I use Windows 7 on two desktops with Firefox regularly - without problems. Just did a check and they're up to date. Issue free. Go for it.

@roger2 ...Dont feel bad...I'm running W7/64bit and FF 56.0.1 still. I refuse to let FF update because I'll loose the addons that I like/need. And yes..I have to resort to Chrome to use my online banking and some other sites because of the old FF.

Yeah, I don't like the auto update. That is why I have hung on to v 66.0.3 for as long as I could. I believe (not certain) that v 66 is the last, or close to the last, that allows you to turn off the auto update. And now the auto update is mandatory in current versions. Not certain, but that is what I seem to recall when looking into this a while back.

But...I am running into more and more websites that refuse to function, and it is making it difficult to maintain some user accounts, process some types of payments, etc. These sites tell me that they are not able to work with old browsers. Even though FF v 66.0.3 is just over 2 years old :confused:

Glad you're still able to make it work.

The only addon I use is Adblock+ . Hopefully whatever new(er) FF I get will be able to cooperate with that one.

I use Windows 7 and have Fire Fox up to date with no issues. IMHO, the one thing that has really kept things going for me is PC Matic. My old desktop is way faster and more reliable than any of the Apple devices I use.

There should not be any issues using the latest version of Firefox on Windows 7. Adblock+ is still around and should work with the latest FireFox version, but really, I'd recommend "uBlock Origin" instead. Functionally it's very similar, but better while also less resource intensive.

As a fellow Firefox user, I have to say that the deck is stacked against us, and things are only getting worse. Chrome took over the browser world, and even Microsoft's new Edge browser is now based on the same Chromium code that Chrome is based on. So while in the old days website developers would code to be complaint with established web standards, now many website developers just wing-it and figure that if their site works properly with Chrome, that's good enough. As Firefox's market-share continues to decrease, there is less and less incentive for developers to make sure a site works properly with Firefox - especially an old version. Hopefully the situation gets better before running a Chromium-based browser becomes essentially the only option remaining.

I have to say though that there is really no good reason to stay with Windows 7. The upgrade to Windows 10 is still free, almost totally automatic, and should take less than an hour. I frequently upgrade and restore old computers, some 15+ years old (Q6600 and above generally), and all are able to run windows 10 just fine.
 
I'm also FT on a OS7-based machine. I receive push notifications (for FF updates) from Mozilla (what seems like) every 8-10 weeks. Just checked: I am version 90.0.2.7872 -- per an update DL'd and installed only 3-4 days ago.

Are you not being prompted by Mozilla for updates? If not, why not? Perhaps you need to adjust a setting to allow updates?
