First/New Turntable

So I ordered and received my first turntable, and luckily it works. However, now is when I need your help most. I am wondering what I need to do to optimize the sound. IT is a Pioneer pl-50. I ordered a new belt with it and put it on. Some of the records sound better than others, which I am attributing to the condition of the records, but I do think there is some tweaking that could be done, and perhaps a new stylus. I am not familiar with using the anti-skating, counterweights, etc. I am wondering also if it is the case that I have to put the tone arm in the right spot and then flip the lever to the down/play section or if it is suposed to move from the resting spot to the record on its own, and if its broken. Any suggestions would help.

The Pioneer PL-50 is a "semi-automatic" - auto return turn table.

You have to position the tone arm manually, initially.

The owner's manual has a full description of the functions
