First post, be gentle! checking out some obscure speakers

so excited to join the group!

i hope to look at 2 sets of speakers today,

Goodman Maximus 5 and ADC 303a

will take a paper roll tube to check the tweeter, any other advice for a first time poster/noob/novice?

my bose 301’s V i have had enough of, not enjoying the music!

Hopefully they are hooked up so you can listen to them. If possible check the woofer foam surrounds for rot.
Make sure all drivers (woofer, mid, tweeter, etc) are working. Try to determine all drivers are correct for the model speaker you are looking at (take a smart phone to check). Or have pictures of the speakers with correct drivers already loaded on your phone.
 
I have a pair of the ADC 303ax. Not sure what the difference is between the “A” and the “AX”, but mine have a lot of bass, and very rolled off treble. The woofers have cloth suspension. I’ve always thought they would make a good econowave project.

I’ve never heard the Goodman’s and can’t comment on them.
 
I had some Goodmans Magisters a while back. Big 15" woofers with massive cast baskets. They had the typical issue of questionable English (or European) capacitors in the crossovers and sounded very muddy. They were way better once recapped but I think they are best suited to a tube amp sound as they are quite laid back speakers. I haven't heard any Maximus however.

btw, welcome to AK. I had a pair of Goodmans. Impressive speakers once they were recapped.

My Goodmans were model EE-65. The cabinet was totally sealed. I had to saw the back off in order to recap. It was worth it. A search of AK will show a few threads on the Goodmans. If you know how to solder and feel comfortable digging into stuff, speaker recapping is one of the simplest improvements that can be done with audio equipment. Recapping my Goodmans was one of the more challenging recaps, compared to most others I have done.

noob question- why wouldn’t you take out the speaker and go in that way? not enough slack on the wires?

The drivers in my speakers were rear mounted to the baffle. After I got the grills off, there was no way to remove the drivers except to go in from the back. Generally, speakers with rear mounted drivers have removable backs. This did not. The back was glued in on my speakers.

Bass for days, and the rest of my opinion will come over time, gotta listen to everything, from bloodsugarsexmagic to steely dan to opera to gregorian chant. from initial listen, not turned up, i think it might be the best $25 ever spent. ever.

Any information about the 5 is sought and if i get more info i will post.

You may need to leverage/pry up the screw head with something to get the screw out.
Glue a toothpick or two (or a wooden matchstick) in the stripped out hole before reinserting the screw.

You could put a T- or Hurricane nut where the stripped screw is and convert to a machine screw if they're keepers. Heck, if they're keepers I'd do that for all the woofer screws.
