for that sort of money it'd be fun to play with. The X-3 series decks don't sound horrible, they're just known to be unreliable.

x-300

thanks for the reply. Yea should be fun to mess with sorta getting thrown in with a pioneer receiver and turntable Cant wait to take it appart and see whats inside

Got it

My first reel to reel. This guy apparently smoked like a chimny because it lookes like it was droped in a bucket of tar.Came with 2 reels i full of tape and a takeup reel. So what should i do first anything i should ck before i attempt to use this thing. The one tape i have was installed by the previous owner so it should be correct. Are there any good reads on this forum anyone would suggest looking at to help a R2R newbe thanks to all in advance

It's a pretty decent deck, especially for the price. Clean the outside with Windex to get the nicotine off. Clean the knobs with a toothbrush and Windex, don't want to be touching that when you turn the knobs. Ewww. Clean the heads, guides and capstan with isopropyl alcohol until nothing comes off on the Q-tip. Clean the pinch roller with ethanol, vodka is fine. Clean until brown oxide stops coming off and you see black, from the rubber. Inside there is a belt, might want to check it in case it's turning to goo. If the pinch roller comes clean but is shiny, it needs to be replaced. TEAC may still have them. Otherwise, check out:

If they don't have it, Terry Witt can rebuild it.

welcome to the world of the reel to reel.
My first deck was a revox A77 mkIV (still have it) and it was a long process to repair the machine. Nowadays it's my PR99 which does most of the work.

repair your tapedeck, buy some good tape and make some recordings. Enjoy it.

Change the belts and let it play. I have an X-300R, it's a nice-sounding little deck. The capstan motor has a reputation for unreliability, but I suspect that most of the bad ones have already burned up.
