First Setup

I'm new to this but I've pieced together my first setup. I've just gotten everything connected today on the floor as a temporary measure--some things need to get moved around to make this work.

Right now I've got a JVC 4VR-5436 and Wharfedale W-25's running together:

I made a rookie mistake when buying a turntable and ended up getting a cheap one with a 6 pin connector that carries power from a main receiver. I sincerely doubt it's worth the trouble but it was cheap and I picked it up thinking it would be a good temporary solution but I did find a Dual 606 online that I liked and that should be arriving soon as is a Kenwood cassette deck that doesn't really match the whole scheme but baby steps, right?

The receiver needs a little bit of TLC (some crooked switches and a missing nob and a blown bulb on the display) that I should get around too once I get a little more comfortable with it (these things don't really bother me as long as it's playing music) but it is a quadraphonic receiver and I went for it because of this. I know it gets a little weird with LPs being CD-4, SQ and QS and I need to look into that a little more but I am into the whole surround thing for albums that I really enjoy so I'm going to try to get a whole setup going for that eventually. It's certainly able to make the W-25's dance--I've been afraid to put the volume up past 3 or 4.

It looks like you're off to a decent start! I'm not familiar with that receiver, but JVC made some decent stuff in those days that tends to fly under the radar.

Not tried a Dual 606, but I have a 505-2 and whilst "audiophiles" moan about things you can't hear, it is a lovley sounding deck!

I got a bit antsy waiting for my TT to come in and remembered that I had my parents' old CD player from years ago (they ditched it to save space when the door stopped opening and I connected the DVD player to the receiver in the living room plus the DVD is a changer and they dig that kinda thing because it's a pain to get to) and after digging it out of the rack in my other room it turns out it was a Sansui CD-V1000.

From what I understand it's not really a big deal. Pretty old and no optical out or anything but I don't think I'm at that stage in the game. I now know that it needs a belt because the drive won't open but as I was a younger, more motivated person back then, I simply took the screws off, lifted the case, put my CD in there manually, and promptly lost all of the screws. I now know that it needs a belt and will look into replacing it although I see nothing that looks like a belt on the inside of this thing. It also doesn't really know what to do with burned discs--I was initially getting a lot of crackles and what have you but I popped in my Isis/Aereogramme split and it sounds just fine. It sounds like music.

I really need to get off this damned computer and get a move on on cleaning up. I have an expedit shelf to build as well. Need to put that NES somewhere along with the original Xbox. Vintage gaming is another one of my hobbies and I have altogether way too many consoles at the moment.

In trying to sort out my table the left channel on my JVC seemed to give up the ghost. I hooked up all the stuff I had in boxes for my other room as well as the Denon cassette deck I just picked up. Amusingly enough after switching CDs in my Sansui player the motor no longer wants to spin the disc. Just my weekend, right?

I put a dense glass on the label of the Lightbulb Sun LP and it really tamed the table's wobble. The table really sounds good which makes me think that maybe there's a problem with my Foo Fighters record but I have been making adjustments to tracking force and anti-skate so I may just be slowly sorting it out. What I really need right now is a brush and anti-static mat. Here's a closer shot.
