First Speaker Build!

Those turned out really good. What kind of slop on the midrange are you talking about? It's possible that the drivers need to break in and your crossovers too. The NAD being new needs to burn in as well. I'm sure by 100hrs everything will be clicking right along.

Bass hits in the upper octaves just sometimes sound a little sloppy. Considering I've only got about 2 hours on the entire setup I'm not complaining too much as I'm sure things will break in a little bit. Guess there's nothing I can do but play them and enjoy the sound :music:

Man that's unfortunate. I would give them at least 100hrs of moderate playback to really form an opinion of the sound. The drivers have to get cozy and those crossovers need to burn in. Give it time.

Nicely done :thmbsp: I've got the feeling you'll be building more speakers in the future.

Once you develop a taste for sawdust there is no telling what you'll build. Once you see what you can with veneered plywood and some edging you'll never want a piece of vinyl-covered particle board crap in your house.

With a couple months under belt with them, how do you like your Speedsters now?

I keep coming back to this design and wanting to build it. First implementation of that ridiculous Tang Band I've liked.

I've been meaning to do an update.

Wow, these turned out to be some very nice speakers. The bass has since tightened up and is quite punchy. Highs are airy and crisp and the mids are smooth. I'm sure having them tucked under the shelf on my desk and so close to the wall doesn't help the sound but they seem to sound just fine. Compared to the kef q100's I had last year these seem to have more sparkle at the top and are much more lively in the lower end, even though the kefs had about 1 1/2" more cabinet space in every direction. This build certainly sets the bar high for 4" drivers and gives plenty of performance for the $300 price tag. Keep in mind I have been near field listening to these (ears about 1'-2' away) so I don't know how they would perform properly placed with stands in a normal sized room.

I've got some audio production friends here at school and it looks like I will be able to set these up and properly test them with all their equipment here at the end of the semester. I'll try to post the results here for anyone who's interested. It'll be fun to se how closely they match up to Paul Carmody's results.

Here is some more eye candy:

Just ordered some cork and rubber anti-vibration pads from supplyhouse.com for $0.29 a piece. The color scheme is spot on and they seem to do a little better job than the lego tires for dampening. I ordered 98 pads and plan on using them on my gear back home as well. Here's a pic.
