First steps to optimize working QR-4500?

Hi. I know this may sound like a weird question, but I have a Sansui QR-4500. It sounds very good, but has never been serviced as far as I know.

What would be the first steps to take to try to improve the sound (other than spraying out the controls etc.)? Replace fuses? Replace capacitors? Anything?

Thanks in advance.

The best thing you can do is replace the electrolytic caps and anything else on the boards that look worn out.

Thanks. There appear to be hundreds and hundreds of caps, though (it's a quad receiver). Isn't there a more specific tiered approach?

Thanks.

The quad receivers will have a **** load of caps. If you want to do it in stages, start with the amp boards, then preamp, then power supply. Keep in mind that you have a first generation quad unit. A good starter/practice unit, but far from the best quad unit. Replacing the caps will improve it's sound but it won't raise it's value much.

I agree with Pete on this one, do the power supplies for the amp, clean everything well, and listen to it.
For the best in Sansui quad go for the QRX 7001, 8001, or the venerable 9001 or the European variants.
They had the best quad decoders.
Search for posts especially from Quadbob as he has tons of experience with the quad units.

Hi. Thanks a lot for the information, folks.

I just mentioned that it was a quad receiver because it is a quad receiver and I wanted some info (which you supplied very well, thanks for this) on which caps to replace first if I decided to go this route.

And, while I do like the sound, I don't use/need the quad functionality at all. I also didn't know where it stood in the hierarchy of Sansui models (in terms of "best" versus "least tasty").

It's just that this is the only Sansui I have so I decided to ask. What I really need right now is a Sansui preamp as I already have another power amp. I just wanted to see if this unit could be improved upon drastically or if I should look elsewhere...for a different and much better preamp (since the QR-4500 has a preamp out, and I had tried that already).

Thanks very much, all.

Regards,
LouLoomis
