First Stereo System ??

First real system that I owned:

Pioneer SX939 receiver
Pioneer PL-112d TT
Altec 886B Speakers

The receiver had a channel go bad after about 10 years of hard living; didn't have the money to fix it, so I gave it away. Don;t remember what happened to the turntable, but the speakers still live; they're on loan to my daughter.

Went on a 12 year drought after that with no stereo system due to raising a family. Started a new system after that, but was really disappointed with what was being offered as compared to my first system (wished then that I had stored it until I had the money to fix it). Even my wife noticed the difference!

first stereo system??

My first stereo "system" consisted of a chassis out of an old ,discarded silvertone console stereo, that I removed from the cabinet, and transported through the streets of Dayton, Ohio on a bycicle, across the handlebars ,about 1 mile or more.(this was summer 1982, i was 14, and DIDN'T WORRY ABOUT DANGER(who does,at that age?). I took it home, and hooked to a pair of 8" utah full-range speakers, and it was my stereo for almost 2 full years. It worked pretty well, with a 6bq5 output per channel(about 6 watts or so). I also liked the bar type 6fg6 tuning indicator. That old chassis ran day and night, and was still running nearly 2 years later, when it was replaced with a realistic sta-430,(10 watts /ch, though it seemed like a lot more, through those realistic mc-600 speakers) which was replaced a couple of years later by a relaistic 65w/ch rcvr, and a pair of mach 2 speakers. A couple of years later, in 1988, i acquired a realistic sta-2300 rcvr(120w/ch), which is still my receiver today. It now runs four mach 2's, and the power switch is out(as is the case on most of those receivers), but,I love that amp, and just can't bring myself to upgrade to a dolby digital system(at least not yet).

Mach 2's

Jack, I'd say your stereo has a high 'fun' factor running four Mach 2! There are a few of us here that have Mach 1 and/or Mach 2 speaker systems. I still have a pair I bought new during one of RS's super half-price sales. While on extended loan with my brother & his three then-teenagers, one woofer locked up, and I brought 'em back home, got the woofer reconed, and they're still a-cookin' great tunes. I've often got them paired with my HPM-900 for some real room-filling, quality sound.

Reciever was a Realistic. Do not remember the # but it was 1973-1974. I do remember paying 129.99 for it. BSR turntable with a 91
shure cartridge. 10" 3-way house brand speakers.

By 1978 it was GAS amp+pre amp and a set of DQ-10s I miss the GAS amps:pity:

EICO 3570 receiver
Marantz 5220 cassette deck
BSR 610 turntable
DIY speakers (12" Jensen Woofer, 5" Jensen Mid, and 1" Philips dome tweeter)

Still have it all

My first stereo system was a Bang & Olufsen BeoCenter 2200 with matching BeoVox X25 loudspeakers. I inherited this system from my parents when I went off to college in 1986, and added a Magnavox CD player (I can't remember which model) not long after.

I held onto this system for ten years, thinking that it sounded pretty good all the while (it sure LOOKED good!). It wasn't until 1996, when I first heard a single-ended 300B tube amp, that I realized just what I had been missing. And the rest is history...

Cheers,
Brian

I had older brothers and we kinda ended up with a family system

One Brother supplied,
Pioneer 65 watt Integrated amp
Pioneer Tape deck

another supplied,

PL-518 TT
& really crappy speakers!

being younger I eventually supplied:

Pioneer HPM-100's (which back in my drunken youth I left at a party.:screwy:

Our Mom worked at a Department store that sold Pioneer equipment.

My first "real" system was from Tech HiFi in Harvard Square, Cambridge, when I was 13 years old, in 1979. If I recall, it was the cheapest or second-cheapest from their catalog of complete systems from around $300 to $10,000:

Technics SA-101 receiver (killed by an apartment mate who wired three pairs of speakers to it and then cranked up the volume)

Technics SL-D35 full-auto turntable (still working in my livingroom system, original cartridge, fourth or fifth stylus)

EPI A70 speakers (6" two-way, still in use as surround speakers in my home theater setup)

Someday I'll probably pick up an SA-101 off of Ebay (they tend to go cheap!) and recreate the original sound, which was quite good.... ahh, nostalgia...
