Fisher 400 and the magic eraser

I thought I would share a pic showing fabulous results with Magic eraser on the faceplate -- several threads seemed to rave about the results, and I too am pretty stoked ...

How do you remove the knobs ? I don't want to break anything ... on very tight ...was thinking of using a spoon with tape at end to pry off ?


with a moist eraser, I started -- this is after a few passes on the bottom, below the knobs..

Brilliant ! Now I can finish the job (on the faceplate, at least -- glass will have to wait, but not too bad..

15-20 mins patiently with Mr Clean going fairly light each time ..-- I am happy with the results (also happy there was zero damage to the lettering - obviously another sign of quality)

I'd go for pulling the whole face off to make cleaning easier. Not sure how it specifically comes off but its usually a few screws and not too difficult to figure out. I do see a nut on the two outer-most controls. That might be all it is.

Isn't the lettering engraved / recessed on these?

I will need to do this when I do the dial glass. yes I see the outer controls w/nuts..a deep socket would probably do the trick .. just glad the $3 Mr Clean could make the faceplate look so much better..looking closer, the lettering looks engraved...

Face plate removes easy. Use spoons and towel on the knobs, unbolt the face plate from the knob stems. take the face plate off. DO NOT CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THE DIAL GLASS. While in there, look at replacing the light seals around the glass (I used foam window seal) , OK I see you got the spoons thing down!

If I may - I use what I feel is a safer method to remove knobs.

I use heavy nylon cord - actually, Crochet Nylon - and wrap it around behind the knob twice, then pull the nylon cord forward. This does not harm the knob or the faceplate.

I have a knob puller I bought on the guitar parts websites many years ago, it works very well. I'll post some pictures later, but they are out there.

Guitarists use a special tool for removing knobs from guitar controls. It should work well on receivers. Here it is:

I bought this set from Amazon primarily for removing plastic trim dashboard pieces from cars, but the tools work very well on audio gear faceplates and knobs as well, especially the tool with the screwdriver handle - it is usually thin enough to get it behind a knob and then gently pry it off. I have used it on my Marantz and Fisher gear. About $12.50 for the set.
