Fisher 400 Glass Removal/Foam

Good Day,

I very carefully removed the front glass and foam from the front of a 400 that I am cleaning in preparation for restoration. All went well. The glass cleaned up very nicely and all lettering remained intact.

My question is? is there any advice on how tight to screw the glass back into the receiver. I don't think I want to tighten the screws too much because I don't want to crack the glass. Any advice?

Also, what product should I use to re-glue the foam back around the glass? Obviously the glue is old and dried up now, and won't re-attach.

Not sure if the product is available way up there, but I used a glue called Gem Tac in a green & yellow bottle when I've had that issue with Fisher receivers & tuners. It's a great art-project glue that adheres rhinestones, gems, etc, to fabric, and it dries clear.

Good thing you were able to clean the glass without smudging the delicate letters; not an easy feat. Snug the screws back in and you're set.

Thanks! I'm also told that 1.4 inch weather stripping is also a good replacement. Is this a popular practice?

rus 1980; The old "foam" is too fragile and brittle to re-attach. Chuck it. 3/16" x 3/16" or so, black or brown weatherstripping (self stick) works very well on the Front of the FISHER Dial Glass. Frost-King Brand. But in Canada/N.S. it might be a different brand. You only need to do the sides and the bottom of the glass. Adding to the top, pushes out the Front Panel and you get light leaks, along with a crooked looking panel. You want the Front panel to sit flush against the subpanel's rubber gasket along the top.

The screws need to bottom out the holdback pads that clamp the glass. The square rubber lengths between the glass and the subpanel have enough give to allow this, without allowing the glass to slip.

The glass looks great! Nice results! What was your process?

Over the weekend I had a booger of a time getting the dial glass off an 800-C. It was really stuck and no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to budge - the lamp sockets were in the way to get the knife between the glass and the rubber bumper for the entire length. I took off the front metal section that holds the dial glass and removed the sockets. I finally had to cut away the rubber bumper that it was stuck to.

Tighten the screws till they are snug, nothing more.

I use self-adhesive weatherstripping trimmed to size to replace those gaskets. If you don't, you'll have light leakage around the edges and the dial won't look right.
