Fisher 400 mods

Fisher "T" Aficionado
I have recently gotten a Fisher 400 receiver and want to bring it up to "modern" specs. I have emailed the FisherDoc asking for either instructions or the restopak, but given his response time...

Does anyone here have a set of the Fisher 400 mod instructions that I could look at?

I dont have a set of the instructions, but try Paul at BizzyBee, his response time is lightning fast. I think that the Triode site also sells kits. If I had a copier I could make out sets myself, complete with the Mouser parts list.

Thanks Rob! I emailed Paul and, yes, he responded very quickly. Unfortunately he no longer does restorations and did not seem to have any instructions. Can you tell me a little more about "the Triode site"? A link perhaps?

If you would like to send me what you have, I'll scan it and return the originals. And pay shipping both ways. (whatta guy!)

FWIW, I recently bought a 400 that had a Fish Doc restopak put in, not by him. It ran nice and cool, but it wasn't as quiet as my old unrestored 500C. Worst of all, it had the tubbiest sound of anything I'd ever heard. I had to turn the bass down all the way just to tolerate it. After about 2 weeks, I couldn't dump it fast enough.

I don't remember other 400s sounding like that, and I don't sure know what made it sound so $hitty, but it really did. Especially the tuner -really thick and muddy. I guess it could have been messed up and maybe I could have had it improved by someone who knew what they were doing.

I sold it to some dude overseas on Stinkbay, and I lost a few bucks on it. Some of those guys outside the US really really want the tube stuff. I think I deported a dud.

I hope other's mileage differs with the FishDoc restos.

I will need the serial number of your 400 as there were two different IF strips in that model, then I can scan the schematic and tell you which caps are usually changed. Send me email as some banner ads in the message section are a real PITA when you are on dial-up (slow) access. robert73@isp.com

Orange Drop coupling caps preserved the overall sound of my 400 and also made it sound a little more lively. OD's did wonders for my Scott 340B as well as a nice pair of NOS preamp tubes. The 400 is a real nice receiver and very dependable.
