Fisher 400 Re-Stringing adventure

I am planning to install the missind dial cord on the 400 - I have the spring, and the service manual is pretty clear about how it is done.

The instr say to glue the dial pointer to the string - any suggestions for what glue? Looks like string goes across the top .. put glue all along center back ? (sorry for crummy pic)

On the back of the slide portion there are 3 notches. 2 end point one direction and center points other. Thread cord thru so it assumes a wide w or m shape. Then equalize the pointer having the same distance from both ends of the log scale. That should get you very close on your frequencies when dialed.
 
Many thanks -- I see how it is done now -- turns out from this shot of the back of the pointer shows that the original glue is still there and must be removed -- I was able to do with flat blade screwdiver...

Fingernail, alcohol, mineral spirits, pretty much anything that wont affect the integrity of the metal would do. Re: glue, I've use a dab of Aleene's but any soft glue to prevent the indicator from slipping. That's pretty hard to do unless you're a violent turner at the ends of the dial
 
Flat blade screwdriver - gentle gentle -- popped out .. looks like it will work -- thx for glue advice -- found some elmers .. and believe me, the dial pointer will be treated kindly !

Do ALL the pulleys in the path of the dialcord spin ?
Turns out the pulley wheel all the way to the left does NOT spin --- tried gently w/small pliers to see if it was just a bit of rust, but it does not turn --

UPDATE - Was able to get the pulley to spin with some paper towels lightly soaked with wd-40 ... took some gentle persuasion with a small pliers ...they all spin now..

Happy to report - we have a moving dial pointer...thank you for your help ... my layout has tension pulley in front, so stringing instructions in the manual I have weren't exact..maybe because I have a "later" model ..only casualty was a dial-glass light on right..
can anyone recommend LED dial glass lights ? Was going to clean up the dial glass anyway, so will replace lights....

From what I can see on the glass it isn't worth messing around to clean that. the letters fall off easily.

A guy on ebay sells a kit for the lights
 
Thx - will check out ebay for LED replacements ... Good to know about the lettering --- everything so fragile after such a long time ... would be such a shame if that bird stopped flying ..
 
You just saved me some major heartache ! -- I was able to find the LED's on EBay:

will make a nice improvement to the dial glass - while keeping the lettering -- meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy VPR Classical through a tube receiver -
 
I've cleaned a 1/2 dozen or so 400 dial glasses vigorously with windex and have never lost a number or letter. They are all 35000 serial number or lower. Am I just lucky or is windex harmless?
 
wow -- Mine is a "late model" w/SN > 50,000 -- have no clue if that is significant, but if I clean the back side of the dial glass, it will be just the ends/edges (where it is actually needed ..... call me risk-averse :)
