Fisher 500c issue

Hello all,


Ive recently bought a fisher 500c after a few weeks of use I had it on today for about an hour I smelled a very strong plastic smell coming from the amp. I turned it off to check it out and saw no smoke or anything. When I tried to power it on again it wont turn on at all. Any ideas why this may be ? I was using the fisher 500c with a Marantz 6200 TT and AR4x speakers. I thank you all in advance for your help !

Let's be clear. When you say it won't turn on do you mean no sound or no lights?

Hey guys seemingly no power at all. Looks like a fuse....now my question is why did I blow the fuse would it be a power issue or should I just change the fuse ?

Get yourself some fuses. Try it again

If the fuse blows then take out the rectifier and output tubes. Try again and see if the fuse blows.

Put the rectifier tube in. If the fuse trips buy a new rectifier. If it does not trip put in the output tubes.

Try with the output tubes. Report back before we start looking into bad capacitors and trannies.

If I may, the Fisher 500C has no rectifier tubes -- it uses a completely solid state power supply. If a new fuse blows, you can try it without any output tubes installed, but more that likely it will be a power supply problem. If the new fuse does not blow, or the old fuse is not blown, then the next most likely culprit is the power switch, which is a known weak point on these units over time.

Check your on/off switch. These are notorious for failure in these receivers. The smell might be a red herring.

As a matter of fact about 2 months ago i just replaced an on/off switch for the 500c. the fuse was good though.I had no other issue other than the bad switch.
