I'm willing to bet your "gold leaf" is radiator paint...
I actually know a conservator who does nothing but gold leaf. Every once in a while I look at the Empire & ponder...

This is actually sheets of foil. It tarnishes way too easily when the topcoat is stripped to be gold, but it's definitely an applied foil material. The seams between the pieces are quite visible.
