Fisher 800-B & Garrard A-II TT find

Hello All...
I just returned from the local recycle center with this beautiful combo-pack! A Fisher 800-B Receiver and a Garrard A-II Turntable in a really nice cabinet. I don't know if the cabinet is an original Fisher cabinet or not but it fits the two components perfectly and the Garrard pulls out on slides to be accessible when using. I had a Fisher 800-C years ago and was so excited to find this setup today. This is going to be my winter project. I don't know the condition of the components just yet but the receiver is dusty but not rusty. The Garrard looks to be a little rougher. I am going to scour previous posts on restoring these pieces before I ask too many questions but might anyone know about the cabinet or how these two pieces relate to each other... like were they used together in consoles alot at the time?

The Type A is not all that uncommon in better console setups. It was a higher end changer from that time period, and was usually used in higher end consoles as a result. Fisher receivers could have been used in pretty much any config you can name. There were a lot of custom consoles that could be equipped with whatever you wanted to have put in.
 
This is a custom console. The only console that FISHER installed the 800B was the '62 Executive... http://www.fisherconsoles.com/executive%20VII.html and it used theType "A" turntable. That's a nice little cabinet. The Right Channel speaker is incorrectly connected. The ground wire should be moved to the GND connection to the left of where it is now. Where it's connected now is the EXTERNAL Ground connection for Turntables, Tape decks, etc.

For the AM Antenna a 1/2" cable clamp will fix the drooopy ferrite rod. Home Depot or Lowes.

When you decide to update the 800B, I'd ask to have this thread moved to the FISHER Forum, OR start a new thread there. You'll get more specific information and answers there.
 
Thanks for the responses. I am definitely looking for someone in the SF Bay area to possibly do a full restoration of the Fisher. I don't quite trust myself just yet with the detail work that seems to be needed to get these units back to their glory... but who knows... maybe I will try... there is a lot of knowledge to discover here at AK! And thanks for the input as to the speaker connection. The pictures posted were of the unit exactly as I brought it home so your advice is great.

I am also wondering if anyone has recommendations on identifying the Garrard cartridge & stylus. And what best to replace it with.

My first impression as well (FWIW) "Pickering". But I don't know model numbers.

I have to say that I am glad that this entire setup was saved from the "Dump" even if it eventually goes to the auction site in parts. Tragedy: throwing it away...
 
I worked on a Garrard 210 that had one of those in it, really the only reason I know what it is. It was not bad sounding at all. Maybe not the most detailed and nuanced thing I've ever listened to but it sounded fine and seemed perfectly appropriate for the machine it was bolted to. The 210 arm is essentially identical to the Type A arm so I would expect pretty similar performance.
