For those of you playing along at home, I finished the x-over recap and it sounds sweet! It really got that little cone tweeter back in the game. Just for future reference, below are the original caps. The larger wax cap was 2uF/50v and the smaller 20uF/50v. I replaced them with NPEs of similar capacitance and higher voltage.

An option to help the top end a bit is to drop in one of the little Foster horns used in some of the Zenith Allegro speakers. It's the same mount, too.

No prob. Those little Foster horns are useful buggers, and can usually be scored quite cheap in those Allegro speakers. I had one sitting around, sat it next to a spare Jensen cone tweeter, and it dawned on me that they were exactly the same size. Figured it was worth a try.

Thanks to FedEx, I finally have an R20 chassis that might not be deranged and useless. Maybe I'll get a bug up my backside and swap some parts between them tomorrow.

Dave is this the same thing you purchased (Foster Horn Tweeter 8 Ohm Speaker Single Vintage 49-1168 For Zenith Allegro) and did you use the caps you replaced before you bought it? Also what caps did you purchase and from were?

Yes, that sounds like the same tweeter and I did listen to the system with the original tweeter in place after I replaced the caps. The recap indeed made a difference, but that little Foster/Fostex horn took to the highs to another level. I especially like it as no changes are necessary, to the baffle, to mount it. I used Dayton Audio (5%) caps from Parts Express.

Sorry, but no I don't Steve. I didn't snap any pics after I put the new caps in. I just hot-glued them to the baffle around the same spot where the old ones were.
