Fisher Chassis Cleanup

Hey guys. Just picked up a pretty clean, relatively untouched Fisher 400. I've already ordered the metalbone rehab kit as well as a new power switch (mine was missing). I'm in the process of cleaning it up a bit, I plan on running it with the hood off. The chassis has a few spots of surface rust that I'd like to clean up with out damaging the chassis or the silk screening. Anyone have any good pointers/products that they've had success with?

A wire brush on a dremel or similar to remove the chunkier rust. Then, if you really want to nuts, you can use MAAS metal polish to shine up the cadmium plating but I would just polish the actual rust spots after wire brushing and leave it at that. I've done the whole chassis on an x100 b with MAAS but it's a heck of a lot of work, not to mention Q-tips. Shines like chrome though. Never did that from the factory I'm sure.

Thanks for the advise. I don't particularly want to strip the whole chassis, just the rust spots. After the brush/dremil/polish will the metal look dissimilar to the rest of the chassis?

If you use anything abrasive or overly aggressive, it will look very different. Anywhere that there's rust, the original cadmium plating is completely gone.

You might want to try some Naval Jelly, dabbed directly on the rusty spots. Follow the directions. It will remove the rust and leave the bare steel a dull gray. You can then shine it up a bit. Remember, since the cadmium plating is gone, no matter what you do the spot will never match the rest of the chassis. Do the best you can, and enjoy the music.

Please be advised that these are designed to be in a cabinet and the chassis materials reflect that.
Even if you make it shine like chrome, it won't stay looking like that and you very well may lose the silk screened information on the chassis in the process.

Eastwood carries a silver cad aerosol that closely matches original cadmium plating. I've used this on my cars and it is pretty close: http://www.eastwood.com/ew-silver-cad-aerosol-12-oz.html

I wouldn't spray the entire chassis as you would spray over the silk screened lettering but you may be able to mask off around the bad spots and mist them in.
