(otherwise known as the DRE. This was an option on my WARWICK. I can only surmise it's probably an RIAA circuit with a preamp for the Phono. This IS NOT the Sound Expander / Reverb unit.

As the GE VR sounds like **** with a LP on it, Like putting a Mag Cart on a Ceramic turntable, and a 78 sounds ok, AND the R-3 has NO RIAA EQ in it that i know of, that's the only thing I can figure it is.

I'm wondering however, if a clone of the GE UPX-003b preamp (made especially for the VR) would work instead of the DRE. I really don't see why not. I did some experimentation with a salvaged Sony Stereo TT preamp and it improved the sound of the LP's immensely but the hum was out of this world (due to one side NOT hooked up.).

So I need to breadboard this somehow during the winter and see what happens.

I have the Hi-Lo Filter and that works very well hooked up into the expander RCA's. So once I get the DRE Clone built, I'll daisy chain the two, with the RIAA /PRE 1st, then the Hi-Lo.

The Dynamic Range Expander does not offer any EQ functions. It is simply an expander used to restore the dynamics lost when the original signal was compressed to allow it to be cut into a 78. It gave you back your crashing crescendos without compromising your pianissimo passages - supposedly. It became less relevant with the advent of the LP but there were still lots of 78s out there in the early 50s that needed to be played.

I've got a UPX-003 that I found rattling around inside the Philharmonic. If you'd like to borrow it to mess around with you're welcome to. It wasn't original equipment on the K-1 so I don't feel quite so burdened with responsibility for keeping it 100% original.
 
Very interesting.Is this some sort of a built in function,or is this a separate box,that hooks up to the console?

It's a separate box. There were in the early 50's, a bunch of add on components (at least 2-3 boxes) that did different things. Like the Range Expander, Hi-Lo Filter (50-F) which I have), Mixer-Fader (50-H), Transistor Preamp (TR-1), etc.
