I have a Fisher 200b FM tuner and it sound great but the transformer gets a little warm and has a slight smell to it from the black stuff on it, actually get warmer than my KM-60 transformer and the KM-60 doesn't get a smell like this.

Do any of the fellow members here with Fisher 200b FM tuners have any issues like this? Voltages seem ok but could be time to do a Multicap CAN power supply upgrade/replacement?

One other thing, when I connected it to my Furman Voltage Regulator/Power conditioner which has an amp meter to see how much amps are being pulled it was the same as the KM-60. If it was a bad power supply or transformer it should have should shown up pulling more amps.

Might want to ask in the Fisher area. That's where the Fisher people hang out. Instead of double posting you might want to ask an admin to move your thread over there.

I've got a KM-60, but no FM200B so I can't help you.

I don't know whether the Furman is sensitive enough to detect that kind of problem. If something downstream is drawing too much current, that could make the transformer run hot. The transformer may also have problems of its own. Look for any extra-hot glowing tubes. Be careful, deadly high voltages in there! If the multicap can is original or just old, it's probably cost-effective to replace it. While the capacitor is disconnected, you might want to very carefully check whether the transformer runs hot with no load. Once the rectified DC is connected to the can capacitor, that gives you another chance to check whether the problem is downstream. Good luck, proceed with caution!

Been a while, buy when I had a FM200B, it ran pretty warm. There's a lot of tubes, plus a relay and lamps all drawing current. Don't remember a smell, but was almost hot to the touch.

Thanks Punker, that's almost exactly how my transformer feels. Everything works fine and sounds good. just that smell, its not really bad but if I walk out of the room and come back in later I can smell it. It was aligned not to long ago by a very good tech, and he went through the whole thing before sending back to the guy I bought if from. Maybe cause it had not been used for awhile.

Like Punker says, it’s got tubes, filaments and bulbs in it, so it will be warm. Compared to other tube gear that I run, my 200B is as cool as a cucumber though. Mine has been on since 10:30 this morning and I am literally right now holding my hand on the transformer, to check for you, and I could
Leave it there all night. Even before I restored it, I don’t remember it ever running hot, and definitely never a smell. Oughtta look under
The hood maybe. Also check in the Fisher forum, TONS of knowledge in there. Good luck
