Fisher Studio Standard MT-6118 Turntable scraping issue. I am a turntable novice! please help me!

i was given an old fisher studio standard mt-6117 by a family member and i would love to use it if i could get it to work. the turntable makes a horrible scraping sound when turning and it seems to be coming from the platter scraping against some internal component as it spins. is this an easily solvable problem or is it something i will have to put a lot of money and effort into fixing? Please help, this is only the second turntable i've ever had and the first was very straight forward to use.

Having it repaired would probably cost more than the value of the turntable - but you could have a go at it yourself.

If the platter is scraping, it must be sitting too low on the plinth. (The case of the turntable.)

Assuming the platter isn't actually warped or bent, the problem will be with the spindle. (The bearing/post that the platter rotates around.)

1. Remove the rubber platter mat.
2. Remove the belt from the motor pulley.
3. Pull the platter straight up and off the spindle. Might be tight. Use a drop of oil if needed. Don't bend the platter.

Try to move the spindle up and down. Is there any play?



This Fisher probably uses a plastic bearing cup. (The part that the spindle slides into.) The bottom (thrust plate) do sometimes break off causing the spindle to drop. You'll have to remove the bottom of the table to check this.
