I have a Fisher cr-5120 cassette deck made in 1978 has 3 ferrite head system

It began eating tapes!!!!! in about 45 seconds of playing any tape it will start eating it

what could be wrong with the deck !!!!!it is the highest end cassette deck fisher made

Is there a simple fix for this? could the belts be bad ? will cleaning it help any ? any info on this will be great

You will need to clean the pinch roller. There is some cleanser at Parts Express for that. In the past, I used rubbing alcohol but that would dry out the rubber pinch roller, so its best to get the right stuff :)

Is your tape counter working? I know this is an unusual question, but on old Yamaha tape decks, if the counter belt broke, the take up would move too fast causing the tape to mis-track at the beginning of the cassette. Check your belts.

actually counter is not working,, will check belts ,

i will let you know what i find
at least i got a starting point thanks

Check the belts.

A loose belt will cause it to eat tapes.

(so does extreme cold... never play a tape in the car when it's really cold... i learned that when I had to dismantle my car stereo in an attempt to save my favourite tape)

Uh... is the take-up reel doing its job?

Torques and other such stuff aside, if there is a problem with the take-up system, that deck will eat tapes.

How about cleaning the idler?

the take up reel stops when the tape starts getting ate

counter dont work havent taken it apart yet this weekend i will be into it

hope it is just a belt when i open it should be able to tell more

this sounds like there is improper drive to the take up spool. Often, a small rubber idler tyre links the motor to the spool table, and over the years the rubber perishes or loses its surface/grip. I have found that going over it with fine sandpaper can get it going well again.

Could also be a drive belt, usually off the capstan in cheaper designs, which has slackened.

It's a bit hard to say what the cause is for sure, since we haven't much to go on. open her up, and post us some pictures!

Tore apart this weekend changed all belts found seperate belt for take up reel !

Take up reel belt was loose as could be when it was cooled down it was playing ok started warming belt up and just spinning pulley inside belt ,,,,that was problem thanks for everyones help on this
