Fisher X-100 Replacement Power Transformer

Hi,

A friend of mine has a Fisher X-100 stereo tube amp that has a blown power transformer. I am hoping to buy it as is with the possibility of fixing it. Does anyone make a replacement or know anyone that can re-wind / fix the broken transformer?

Thanks for the help

Rob

Transcendar just provided a new-made output transformer for my X-100C and had it to me in about two weeks. The price was quite reasonable. I believe could have also rewound the power transformer if I had needed it and their website says they make customer power transformers to spec, which I expect means they could wind one for your Fisher. The new OPT works very well. No affiliation with them, just pleased with their product and service.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, the power transformer on my '59 X-100 is toast.

Transcendar's website is enticing, but offers zero information on how to contact them. Are they even still in business?

Any other options besides waiting to pounce on eBay if/when a replacement donor becomes available?

They are in business and doing fine. Just rewound a Scott power transformer for me and did a great job. Their contact information by email is:

sales@transcendar.com

They are responsive and the key contact's name is Gery. I have had a number of output transformers (as per above) either replaced by their new units (Fisher and Scott) or re-wound and have been most happy with the results and service. The Scott PT was about $125 to rewind, including shipping (I had to ship the original to them as well). There are a few transformer types they make new, but I think all power transformers are either custom made or rewound.

Again, no affiliation, just very happy they are around.

Good luck with the Fisher!
Dave

PS Another option is Heyboer. I have not used them, but they seem to have a good rep as well.

Thanks so much for this info!

If you are going to have one custom wound, you should consider asking for a dedicated winding to use with a rectifier bridge to generate 44V to power the 12AX7 heater string as a stand alone supply. Then you could run the EL84 tubes more gently which would put less strain on the power transformer.

Thanks to @Dave451 , I was able to get in touch with Gery and it looks like he will be able to rewind the transformer for a reasonable price. I plan to retrieve the Fisher from the tech on Saturday, and will ship the transformer off for rewinding.

Would I be correct in assuming that reinstalling the transformer is a simple task? I know little about electronics theory and can't read a schematic, but I recently built a tweed Fender Champ clone from a Mojotone kit, and it works...

But, isn't the V1 through V4 heater lines part of the bias circuit of the 7591 tubes? What resistor(s) do you replace them with, after removing this string?

Thanks! :)

BTW, just curious - what happened to cause the loss of your Fisher PT? Must have been a big issue.

When I did one of these a while back, IIRC I used a common cathode bias setup for all 4 tubes, with two 220 ohm 10W resistors in parallel, bypassed with a 100uf 160V cap. I didn't bother with the bias adjustment pot.....was making it simple. You might need to tweak the resistor values, though, but this will get you close.

The X-100 transformers have a crappy history of going bad. Most likely under powered or with a defective fusible link in them. One of the worst transformers in FISHER products.

I suspect it had begun to die before it finally croaked. It had been sounding kind of anemic for a while, so I replaced the power tubes. After that, it sounded good for exactly one night and then on the second night, I heard a pop and one channel went completely dead. The tech told me that the transformer took out one of the new power tubes too. :(
