Fisher XP-12's vs KLH 6's

I'm probably a majority of 1 but I'd go for the Fishers. The KLH 6 is very well respected, liked and is a really good speaker but, a functional XP-12 has a sound that is so smooth and so nice for classical and jazz.

If the KLH 6 is early enough, the drivers are part of the baffle and getting into them requires cutting the back, a pain.

I picked up the Fishers; the highs are lacking like people have said but the midrange an bass are good. Got 'em hooked up to the TV right now. The grilles are nailed on; I'll have to dig out a flat-bar an try to pry them off, hopefully without damaging anything. Either way whatever goes back on will probably use velcro.

The grills should not be nailed on. They slide back and forth in a channel. You need to fiddle with them a bit, you'll figure out how to get them out.

The tweeters on these models do not hold up well after a few decades of time have gone by. I would first recap the crossovers, see how that sounds, and then if you're not satisfied swap out the tweeters for something more modern.

It sure looks like a nail in the middle when I pry out the top. So I just shove the grilles to one side or another an they should pop out?

Well, it's certainly possible that a previous owner tacked it down. Just be as careful as you can, and if you want to try prying, use a piece of wood or something similar to protect the edges of the cabinet.

I heard a set of XP series Fishers today. Didn't know they had a following. They were in a thrift store. They had like a 4 inch cone tweet, three 6 or so inch mids and a 10 or 12 all crammed into the speaker baffle.

They were the house speakers, and they were playing some very tastefully done jazzy techno. I thought they had a very relaxed sound and it was a perfect counterpoint to the very quick envelope of the sampled instruments. I found the frequency response to be very smooth, if not particularly resolute. They had a nice soft focus to them.
