My friend was looking through goodwill today and found some old fisher XP-65k's for 25 bucks. I have heard that the early fisher xp's are good (these are from 73') so i told him to get them . He wasn't able to get the Grilles off
(Nailed on =O ) so i really have no idea what these have. Does anybody know about these? I would fell kinda bad if i wasted his 25$ :tears: .

I just picked up some XP-7b's and they sound wonderful. The grills are attached with six small nails. Pry gently on the sides and they will come off. If they sound o.k. just enjoy them and leave the grills alone.

I'm not familiar with the XP-65 but my XP-7S's were vintage 1973 and they sounded much better than their price would've indicated, and they served me well for more than 30 years until I retired them in the late 1990's.

I picked up a pair of XP-65 (no letter suffix) a year ago last summer at an estate sale for $20. I hooked them up before I took the grills off and I could tell right away they were in need of foam (very little bass output). The grills were nailed in place, as were yours. Once I knew where the 6 nails were it was relatively easy to get behind them and carefully pull them up with the grill at the same time (they were about 2" long!) so as not to damage the grill, or cloth. I refoamed the 10" woofers and rebuilt the crossovers to the original values. I left the cone midrange and tweeters alone. I stapled on Velcro to the cab's (you can see one in the photo) and the grilles which allow easy removal. If I hadn't been in such a hurry I would have spent more time straightening up the clothes before reinstallation- it's quite obvious the cloth is not completely square. Oh, well...

Easy refoam job (seems like the larger the speaker, the easier). Very 'mellow' sound- low wattage- typical late 60's-early 70's acoustic suspension style speaker. Not rock 'n' roll speakers. They're not going to replace my BIC's or C-V's for loud parties or loud r&r listening but are perfect for the majority of time when the volume is held to lower levels. I keep thinking I want to get rid of those cone mids/tweets and see if I can improve them but not anytime soon due to the economic climate we're in currently.

Let's see a photo of your friend's XP-65k's! I'm interested in what difference there is in the suffix, what they look like and how they work.

OH My!

Well last night my friend came over with his speakers and they looked pretty good. Just like yours blast, except that there was a sort of wooden lattice over
the grills and there was a little badge that said "THE fisher XP 65k" (its not a speaker, its an experience ! :p:). Well things started getting bad after we took the grills off. It looks like the goodwill people didn't bother to take the grills off because one of the woofers was missing and the other had no surround! eek: . After banging our heads against the wall for five minuets we decided to plug those bad boys in and see what they sounded like :D . Actually considering the state they where in they sounded quite good ! . That surround-less woofer was absolutely freaking out (MASSIVE excursion  ). So anyways we went back to goodwill today and traded the dead fishers in for an pair of big old sony's with 8inch woofers that actually sound pretty good (ill have to get the model numbers from him sometime).

I bought a pair of vintage 1960's Fishers...I don't know the model#'s ...but they have picture frame style ,front moldings. They look like they came originaly painted..a pale yellow color. They are approx 20"x 12" x 12"....I believe they are 10" or 8" woofers possibly 2 or 3 way. They sound pretty sweet with my tube amps! They are in my dusty crawl space...waiting for my vintage wall of sound...coming in a few years!

Sorry to hear about the condition. Would loved to haved share notes on how they sounded. I'm sort of surprised they let him return them. I wonder if I would have even TRIED to return them (the thought of the transportation hassle factor and with having to deal with people would have left me cold). It wouldn't have been unlike me to just buy another pair of woofers (after testing the rest of the drivers, of course). But glad to hear he was satisfied with the whole deal.
