I watched this last night for the first time in 10+ years. The first part is hilarious but what a terribly sad movie. I think it might be Kevin Smith's best. I read somewhere that the movie is about an issue he had while dating the lead actress who plays Alysa, the lead female role in the movie. I also read that Miramax wanted him to use big name talent such as Drew Barrymore, but he insisted on his line up. He then made the movie on his own and sold it back to them, with Miramax throwing him $250k up front. Given the plot ends with Holden showing the comic to Alysa (about their failed relationship), and the story behind it, it seems as if it might have been Kevin's way of apologizing (e.g., read this script, it's about us. I'd like you to play Alysa.)

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It brought back a lot of memories (good and bad) given it's release in the mid 1990s and me being in my early 30s today. A great amount of psychology and drama mixed into what starts of as a laugh-a-minute comedy.

I saw it years ago and remember being a bit uncomfortable. Not that it was a bad movie, it just struck a difficult chord. I'm guessing that's intended.

It hits a lot of touchy subjects - not the movie you want to watch with your mother. I find the humor very amusing, but it's just a very sad movie. Touches too close to home I guess, but I think that is the point.

Seeing that it may actually be about Kevin Smith, it's actually kinda sappy. One hell of an apology.
 
I just introduced a young employee to Maiden. I made a playlist of my favorite artists with the idea of "If I can pick one song to start someone on this band it would be ____".

Not necessarily my favorite song or the best song, but a good introduction. For Maiden I chose Benjamin Breeg. Maybe his best vocal work and it has that epic, slow building pace that they do so well.
 
That was one of his better one's. I loved his films at the time, but re-watching them they do seem kind of dated.
 
I enjoyed the movie and felt like it could of exactly described one of my relationships.
 
Definitely dated. I think that's part of the appeal - I was in my late teens first time I saw them...looking back on the subject matter as a man, I have a totally different perspective on life, love, and women.
 
Yeah, a very personal movie and like Tarantino said one of the best made that year and one of Smith's best.
 
Johnny Depp just lived it

he met Amanda Heard on the set of Rum Dairy an out lesbian but they started up a relationship,in fact Johnny left his girlfreind of twelve years for her. A year and a half later Amanda leaves Johnny for a female Paris Model who is even hotter than she is. I think Johnny is ok though,like the dude is probably knee deep in ladies. :smoke:
