Flat screen monitor troubles?

Hey AKers,

In 2003, I got a Dell flat screen display. It's worked pretty well alright for the past 2.5 years, the resolution isn't great, but lately I've been having an annoying problem. I haven't studied flat screen technology...but here's my problem:

I usually leave the thing on if I'm home, and usuall;y right after you turn it on, the backlighting is somewhat dim, and it then gets brighter as they warm up. Well, lately, as it's been warmed up, the backlighting dims to the point where it's as bright as when I just turn it on, and then the backlighting fails completely. The unit is still on, it just has no backlighting. Turning it off for 10 seconds or so and then back on fixes it briefly, and then it does it again.

What is wrong with my display? And is it even fixable? Or is it just like a flat screen TV where when something goes wrong after three years it's only good for the trash hopper??

It sounds like the backlight (flourescent) or the power supply for the backlight is dying. It may be repairable for a reasonable cost but it's hard to say.
