Flickering lights w/static- Yamaha CR-420

Hello everyone- I have a Yamaha CR-420 that I bought from the original owner. It is in fantastic cosmetic condition, but the internal lamp keeps flickering, which I know is no big deal and can be easily replaced. However, when it flickers, it sends audible static to the speakers- do I have a larger problem on my hands than the bulbs, or is it normal to do that? All input welcome- thanks guys!

Might even be the fillament inside the bulb itself. I've personally experienced instances with intermittent lamps caused by a broken or disconnected fillament.
 
You might have loose/cracked solder joints somewhere. Could be the power switch, a speaker relay, or any damn other thing since, as I recall, the CR-420 just has the one circuit board and is notorious for noise caused by bad grounding.

But first thing you should do is check to make sure all the screws connecting the circuit boards, heat sinks, etc. to the chassis are tight. Don't overtighten but make sure they are snug. This could very well fix your problem.

The 420 is a really nice little receiver, worth getting sorted out. I find it sounds a little "warmer" than some of the bigger/more powerful Yamaha models of the time. I have a couple, I'll put one out from time to time and they always make me smile.

Great tip- thanks! I love my little receiver- you’re right the sound is very warm, but am thinking about upgrading to something that can handle a 4 ohm load. I have a set of B&W 202i speakers that I LOVE the sound of, but I’m worried I’ll overwork this little guy driving them.

It will handle a 4 ohm load, just use only 1 set of speakers.
 
Your CR-420 can drive those B&W's fine. I've used mine to power big (BIG) floorstanding 4-ohm JBLs and it would play loud for hours with no issues.
 
So basically if I want to play all 4 at once, I have to trade in my 4 ohm speakers for 8 ohm? Also in your brutally honest opinion- is it gauche to play 2 pairs of speakers together? Asking for a friend, or something.

I run 2 pairs of speakers. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. Together they compliment each other.
