Fm Antenna For 75 Ohm Harman Kardon Receiver?

New Member
My old Sony STR-AV710 finally died.
So grabbed a Harman Kardon 3480 to use with my Cerwin Vega E-715's and just a CD player
Looks like it has a coax cable looking antenna hook up?
The wife and I just normally use 4 stations 3 rock/ classic rock and one country for her And maybe a 5th as a easy listening
What would be best on the cheap.
I had no problems with just a Dipole that has striped wire ends like yoiu would hood a speaker up on the old Sony getting stations.
Kinda looked at Ebay to get a look at whats out there. As a guide

You could just get several feet of some solid core 22 AWG wire and strip the end bare about 1/2 inch and insert it into the center hole of that F connector. If your favorite stations are reasonably strong, that should work well enough.
 
I do not at this point have a F connector.
What I have is just the old Sony Dipole that was hooked up with the striped wire.
So looking at either going to Radio shack ect and getting an F connector to add to the old one.
Or getting one that has the right Connection as what i have will not work.
Kinda did not want to waste $ on a F connector if doing something else would be better
Thus my thread and being an idiot on stuff like this

The F connector is what's already on the back of your receiver (that's not really what it is, but trust me). You don't need anything more than a hunk of wire stuck in the hole.

epifanatic, you beat me to it, I had to leave my computer for a few minutes.

But I will post anyway and include some additional technical information for those that might be interested.

You could use a push on style balun transformer as shown in the first picture if there is enough room.

Or a regular balun transformer and clip off the spade lugs, strip a little bit of the insulation and splice to your FM dipole antenna. The use a short coaxial cable jumper from the balun transformer to your receiver.

This said, you may not notice a huge improvement.

The mismatch loss for a 300 Ohm antenna connected to a 75 Ohm connection is a little less than 2 dB.

A typical balun transformer may have losses of 0.5 dB or more. I have measured some that were as much as 1 dB or more.

Then you will have the connections if you have to use a standard balun transformer and splice the connections and the connections of the jumper cable.

Each loss is a small loss, but the mismatch loss of using the dipole antenna directly into your receiver is less than 2 dB, so the difference might end up being around 1 dB. Not a large difference.

It may be worth a try, and might improve your reception, but do not be surprised if you do not notice a lot of difference.

Again, each situation is different, and long distance prediction is not always accurate.

Long as we got the experts here ... anyone make a Motorola/F cable about three feet long? Made my own to add a car HD Radio tuner head to the home system, but figure a real quality cable couldn't hurt ... all I need is enough to get to a splitter mounted on the back of the rack ...

PS ... this is a low watt college station around 25 air miles away, so I don't figure I'm doing all that bad as is ...

Probably helps that this is what's on the other end of the line ... That's a stacked Antenna Craft FM6 and Dynalab ST-2 ...
