FM Sounding Good

I have a Pioneer SX-737 and a pair of Infinity OVTR-2 speakers in the room where my computer is and if I'm getting a good signal, it really sounds good. I don't know how accurate FM produces but compared to listening to a CD I think it sounds better. That is if it's a song that I really like. The room is small and one speaker is closer (probably about five ft.) to me than the other, but it still works out well.

I have $37 in this system. I bought the SX-737 quite a few years ago for $35.00 and the speakers a few years ago at a yard sale for $2.00. I definitely got my money's worth out of these two.

I used to love listening to FM and especially a local college radio station that would play great music at night. A lot of stuff that I had not heard before and a real eclectic mix at that. Then they got a new studio and went to only talk like NPR. Very sad. These days I only listen to radio stations on the computer as there just aren't any good local stations anymore. I used to love my cheap Technics analog tuner. It sounded wonderful. I do miss that station and the music that they played. Oh well...

I have two stations near me that plays good (to me) music at certain times. One features Way Back Weekends, and I listen to it a lot on weekends. The other plays older music and I listen to it through the week.

Atypically, a powerful, popular, regional FM rock station actually improved its SQ in the past year or so. I had noticed that their loudness noticeably decreased but the audio, especially deep bass, was better. WAPL had previously been the loudest station on the "dial" but now I have to turn the volume up. The signal level is the same so I'm guessing they bucked the trend by reducing compression; not sure though. Perhaps their 100KW gave them opportunities that lower powered stations don't have.

I inquired about this but didn't get a reply, so if anyone has info about WAPL's change in audio quality please message me or post.

Same in my region, the vast majority of stations are part of chains and they play homogenized corporate crap. There was a good college station. It had no format and played a lot of good music that I never heard before. Apparently the students that ran the station graduated and were replaced, now its mediocre.

I have a Kenwood KT-7550 that I updated with tips from fmtunerinfo.com, incredible sound that easily beats CDs IMHO.

Welcome to the world of analog.

Yea FM in Hi-Fi can sound really good! Great score! I love the break down of what you paid for too. I like to trade gear for gear, over the years i've found some great gear that i've traded up for that basically cost me pennies. For example I have a custom set of Quicksilver KT monos that were built in 2022. Serial #'s 34 & 35 that I traded for a speaker (Stephens TrueSonic) Got the speaker for free as part of a deal I made with a fellow AKer on building him some custom interconnects. He threw in the driver for free. Well one of my buddies also an AK member needed said driver so he swapped me the amps for the driver. I had Zero $$ invested in it. Love me some good audio deals!!
