FM tuner quit working in my Onkyo TX-666

I've had this receiver for about a month and it has been working great until today.

I was listening to 107.3. It had a very strong signal and sounded great. All of a sudden it went to nothing but static. I thought it may have been one of kids messing with it at first, but nothing was touched. I figured maybe it was a radio station issue and tuned to another station, 97.9. Again very strong signal and sounding great. After about a half hour or so...it did the same thing again. The station went to static and now I can't seem to get ANY station to come in at all. There's nothing but static and if you were just listening you wouldn't even be able to tell when I'm moving the dial...in other words there's not that usual sound of the tuner trying to get a signal.

I live in a fairly metropolitan area and I could get 3 or 4 stations with no antenna at all when I first got the receiver. I recently hooked up some spare speaker wire to use as an antenna, and I was able to pick up many more stations and got much stronger signals.

The AM tuner is working fine.

The tuning capacitor probably needs cleaning. This thread gives simple, detailed instructions.

If you know which end of a screwdriver to hold, you can do this.

Clean the tuning capacitor first with Deoxit and Faderlube on the bearings. Clean all contacts well. Should improve things.

Honestly...the apocalypse crossed my mind ever so briefly.

And I will definitely try the cleaning method suggested and report back.

The cleaning that you guys recommended did the trick. I finally got time to do it this evening and the tuner seems to be working fine again!
