Foam and Spounge

Well I stuffed those Yamahas today with polyester foam, 20 OZ each speaker. Seemed to smooth things out. Less boomy and maybe a little tighter bass. The Speakers I think are still So So...But it's my bedroom system powered by my SX-3000. HPM-40's are in the rear. I Pop in a tape or CD and drift off to sleep ZZZZZ....
 
Well I donated the Yamaha's to my buddy. he has a cabin in West Virginia. Really got a chance to crank them up over New Years driven by a Kenwood KR-7600...WOW! Mated with a pair of old HPM-60s with a new Pioneer 10" woofer from Parts Express.
Everyone there loved it!
 
Yah that probably did clean the bass up some but I wonder if it might have been better
just to completly stuff the cabinet and not drill the holes.

But when used as a party speaker the holes should add some extra bass, so it depends
on what excactly your going for. Trial and error I allways say!
 
These are definetly used as party speakers! Every time I turn around someone is fiddling with the equalizer, the tone controls, the 3 way loudness buttons, and cranking it up and shouting in my ear, how's that sound? I know when everybody keeps playing with it that its a hit! A worthy donation for sure. My Buddies cabin is on the Cacapon River in WV. We go up all the time in the spring and summer for weekend canoe trips. Friday night is always the big party night at the cabin before we hit the river on Saturday. Nothing like a bunch of 40 somethings all hung over shooting the rapids and camping out!
 
I have a pair of cheap Pioneer towers that are ported (obviously, it's Pioneer) and have no insulation inside whatsoever. What would the effects be of filling? Less boomy? also, is it bad to have walls too close to the side of a speaker?
 
Well to get more bass out of a speaker you generally move it closer to a wall but you sacrifice imaging.

Yes adding some stuffing to the speakers should tighten up the bass.

With a ported speaker the walls of the speaker should be damped/lined.
With a sealed speaker you fill it.

Now these are just rules but by no means are they set in stone. There just a starting point.

I got a pair of those too! And yes they suck! Especially mine as they were filled with black mold :no:

I MIGHT build new tall boxes like that and E-Wave them :music:
